IIRC part of the neoliberalisation of the Guardian and the expunging of any class forward, leftist commentary occurred around 2015 when it began collaborating with British intelligence services, mostly in response to government pressure after they were the first news outlet to publish Edward Snowden's revelations about the NSA. There's been a serious neutering of actual journalism ever since. I'll see if I can find anything detailing the whole process, since i think it's instructive to see how b…

With the friendzoning thing, I've often found myself in a bind because I only develop romantic attraction after I've been friends with someone, and I have a really hard time finding satisfying connections without that initial friendship period. Sucks all around really. Since that's so difficult and rare, I tried simply "dating" my current girlfriend and while it doesn't seem to bother her, to me the courtship just felt like me performing a character for her amusement and we didn't actually build…

I've been thinking about this for a while. My best friend is a woman, and I've been talking to her about possibly ending my relationship with my girlfriend. My friend seems to have genuine difficulty understanding that although the relationship has problems, I'm willing to work on them, to her the obvious and only solution is to move on and find another relationship that doesn't have the problem. I wonder if the relative gendered disparity of dating opportunities affects our perceptions? To her,…

I managed to get through to a friend who became like this by withdrawing from her company for a while. When she asked why I didn't invite her out anymore I said I didn't think she'd want to spend time with a man because of her beliefs about them. After a few bungled explanations and justifications she softened her position and apologised.

Since I've been at University I've made friends with someone who like me is on the Spectrum, and one thing that I've noticed is that even though we have the same essential problems most of the time, the gendered way society treats them means that an intervention that would really help her would be totally ineffectual for me, and vice versa. Eg, we both have social difficulties, but her main problem is that she's unable to manage the vast number of friends and acquaintances she has and gets anxio…

It might just be me living in a country that doesn't have a draft, but I think it's interesting that no one ever seems to think that the people who have the most stake in the society should be the ones who should want to defend it. And since men as as a group experience more workplace fatalities, poorer health outcomes, higher suicide rates, a higher risk of being the victim of violence and crime and much lower university admission rates, as well as not receiving as much in welfare benefits from…

Ahh, see you've seen that too, it was a bit of a demoralising thread. It's interesting that as soon as the issue of the draft came up, the supposed feminists on the sub immediately seem to adopt a view of women as basically breeding stock only valuable for repopulation after the men have done their duty and been killed.

I saw that, I didn't realise it was removed :/ there was a big thread where the Russia-Ukraine War was being discussed, they had a podcast where some of the civillians in Kyiv who'd stayed behind to fight were interviewed and there was one guy (I think he'd been some sort of artist before the war) who was clearly both terrified and understandably somewhat resentful that he'd been made to stay despite having the combat skills of a deckchair. Most people were really horrified by the poor man's lot…

I've also found them to be getting better in general. There's a lot less "I want to paint my nails" posts and a lot more discussion of structural violence and discrimination against men. That being said, I can't quite gauge the subs general opinion on conscription. It seems like almost 50:50 split between advocates of men's liberation and male disposability, and it's more notable because the rest of the discourse has noticeably improved. (Likely because more men have joined, as you say)

Yeah, I think so. For my own personal life (and I recognise this is a somewhat privileged position) the main consequence is that I end up almost exclusively dating women who I have nothing in common with and attempting to manufacture chemistry from scratch after the fact, as women I have actually close, intimate friendships with and who's company I enjoy consider me to have roughly the same innate sexuality as a deckchair. I'd love to know the root cause psychologically on both our ends, because…

I can relate to that. It doesn't effect me in the same way as it does you but I have a form of OCD myself and expend a hell of a lot of time and energy trying to prevent my own hypothetical nightmare reality from coming to pass! It's promising that you're conscious of it being an irrational thought, I don't share Reddit's belief in therapy as being a cure all (or even all that useful) but have you ever considered it? Might help if you can talk through your anxieties.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/02/22 04:56 PM

Ah fair play, so it's like accumulated from repeated exposure to hyperbolic media? Just to further clarify, is it your partner's hypothetical infidelity that bothers you, even though you know intellectually it won't happen? Or is it a fear of the actual concept of infidelity?

What's societal sensationalism trauma? That's a new term for me!
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/02/22 04:04 PM

I think I might be missing something here, if your partner is asexual, why would you fear male infidelity at all? With reference to evopsych, if you can avoid it I generally wouldn't pay it much mind. As with most discussions of evolutionary theory, it tends towards describing traits that are applicable across a population, as evolution is usually thought of as something that happens at a population level not an individual one. Genes aren't destiny, after all.

I've struggled with this too, it's ended up with me living with body dysmorphia. The most harmful cliche I think people trot out to men in my situation is the whole confidence is sexy thing. I know that! It's just that I've never been confident ever,no matter what I do, and wouldn't begin to know how to fake it! And I've internalised misandric standards of beauty and masculinity so much that I don't even really have a self image, I just live for occasional validation from women I shouldn't reall…

An observation I've noticed at my University; in my mixed friendship group of roughly 30 people, all the men work, except me (I worked long hours last year during lockdown so I could live off savings this year) but only one of the women does. Somehow, the women, who's lifestyles are much more expensive to maintain than the men's, what with more frequent nights out, shopping for fun, etc can manage to survive Uni life without a job. I'd be very, very interested to know the root cause of this. I w…

My best friend is a woman and I was genuinely shocked when we first became close about how open she was about her sex life. Once we'd passed some hidden line, she was happy to describe anything at all, and I was particularly taken aback by how "anatomical" her descriptions were; literal blow by blow accounts of her meeting a stranger, what the stranger did to her and how much she did or didn't enjoy it, and how he stacked up to the last few strangers. It's so different to my experience with men …

I've been wondering about that, I'm British and I've noticed it too, even in myself (who really should know better) It's particularly interesting because I think a lot of British women don't particularly value that kind of behaviour and are actually suspicious and judgemental of men who treat them too kindly.

It's interesting you say that, because I think you're bang on the money. I've just returned from a night out with one of those same friends and have spent the whole night bordering on an anxiety attack trying to keep her safe, as she goes off happily chatting to everyone without a care in the world. I have literally no way to communicate to her what the actual experience is like for me because she has no frame of reference for it.

I'm genuinely a bit worried about a lot of women's high levels of fear of situations when they aren't actually in much danger. There's been a thing in the UK about people drugging women with syringes, bars have got policies, plans etc about it, even though there's never actually been a single recorded incident. I don't know if its a side effect of lockdowns (I know they made me very paranoid and mistrustful) that's just societally accepted in women to the point it was never seriously challenged …

The way I see it, she's just quite young and hasn't ever had a male friend before, she's still finding ways to express herself and how she feels about the world and her place in it. I know I had some cringe inducing opinions back when I was 18! I think a recent near sexual assault and a string of unpleasant interactions in a very short space of time was just weighing on her particularly heavily on those nights and she just got it out in a way that society always taught her was totally acceptable…

It affects my dating life in that it reduces the pool of women I'd be happy dating, in the sense it's given me the tools to notice casual misandry and the dignity to consider it not acceptable in a partner. For an example, a couple of months ago I started became closer to a friend from Uni and an attraction was starting to blossom, right up until she went through a few days of posting anti-male snapchats, with quite violent language to boot. I gently confronted her about it a few days later, and…

I still wonder if being a leftist is one of the things that exacerbated my body dysmorphia. Lockdown and dating definitely played a role but I've been in leftist spaces since I was 15 and I can imagine how the general lack of regard for men emotionally and physically, enforced by body shaming and bullying, could have a subtly corrosive effect on a young person's health and development.

I remember seeing a review of the first Sex and the City film in an old gaming magazine, and the critic gave one of the best (and funniest) criticisms of a media product I've ever heard. "It is Al-Qaeda's view of the West, and once you understand that, you'll understand why they hate us"

I did it once, no difference aside from genuinely disturbing nightmares and a hair trigger temper. Very fucking weird but I think it's mostly a meme and I'm not too worried about it harming huge amounts of men at this time. I've also had largely good experiences on the menslib sub myself, although I find the place has a slow but definite corrosive effect on my mental health and I learned to take breaks from it once I discovered this sub; spending time on it during the pandemic really did me quite a lot of harm and I found it extremely frustrating to learn their weird vernacular and sad that it actually mostly succeeded in stopping me from expressing myself properly. I came directly from menslib to here after someone complained about this sub on there. I think it's main issue is that the mods there are truly excellent at their job; that is to control discourse and enforce their extremely punitive and harsh view of men as a gender. That being said I truly do think there's hope for the userbase. Almost everything I've posted on a huge variety of issues has received upvotes and positive attention. Interesting video, I'm not sure they truly understand what they are saying but that it occurred to them in the first place is probably an encouraging development. Thanks for posting this OP, great idea. For me the most serious wound is body dysmorphia. As a neuroatypical man, I'm no one's ideal of a partner, and boy are women not shy about letting me know that! After spending my late teens and early twenties watching my female friends pair off, I resolved to change the one thing about myself I could control without compromising my personality (which I actually rather like); my appearance. They had this at my uni but most people didn't know about it, so now it's descended into backbiting and recriminations aimed at the girls who did go out. I was already in a wetherspoons the first I heard of it. It definitely seems to be an issue though, I know of 4 spikings in the two months I got here. The injection thing is a myth though I think, not heard of that other than in hysterical news reports.

I genuinely read Jessica Valenti's column in the guardian for half a year thinking she was a satirical character and I thought it was brilliantly clever and funny, a slight exaggeration of the gripes middle aged white media women make made into a really entertaining caricature. You can imagine my suprise when the woman who wrote an article called "Why I miss being catcalled" in a national newspaper turned out to be 100% serious. Yeah, I think some degree of militancy is basically inevitable if we want to actually make societal change a reality, the examples of workers rights, civil rights and early feminism would seem instructive there. But as it stands at the moment I don't think the material conditions are right. Our movement is quite fractured and is still much much smaller than our opposition, and any attempt at protest, even non violent, will just be crushed by the state and likely end up with even more good men be…

I believe 16 is legal here as well, although there are exceptions to that rule. I think there's also Romeo and Juliet laws so when 2 15 year olds have a preexisting relationship, no crime is being committed when one partner turns 16. I just found it so strange that in a country like Britain that's been rocked by several massive institutional paedophilia scandals and where the tabloids semi regularly run unfounded allegations of "noncing" at social misfits, I'd never seen that particular phenomen…

Tangentially related, but there is a kind of rape culture (I'm sure it targets boys too but i've not encountered it personally) that I really think should be discussed, and I've never heard feminists, activists, police, anyone really raise objections to it even though it's extremely open and definitely illegal. I live in Britain and I'm not sure how prevalent this is nationwide, but in my local area statutory rape was basically normalised. You'd go home from school and men sometimes in their mid…

They really aren't well equipped to handle this topic are they? I suppose this is part of the problem of misrepresenting the demographics of the community; an ethnic minority guy who posts in menslib about his experiences is probably expecting an audience of other men, but since he's probably at some point going to have to critique white women's attitudes and they actually make up a huge percentage of the sub's users, he gets a much more hostile reception than he could reasonably expect.

Yep, I've seen this many times. A good example that people here are likely to be aware of is the men'slib thread about Indian men's experiences which rapidly devolved into a total dumpster fire, although it does seem at least a decent segment of the community there was unhappy with it. IIRC, Asian men and Black women are the least desired ethnicities on dating sites for women and men respectively. Do any Asian comrades have thoughts on root causes, how this is best addressed etc? I've had a few sexual comments from (mostly older) female customers at my last job. Mostly I wasn't too bothered by it, the main problem it caused me was that I got worried my supervisors would throw a fit if I was seen talking to them too long. What was extremely distressing was when it was done by underage women. I worked in a convenience store in a pretty shitty neighbourhood and it wasn't uncommon for older teenagers to come into the shop fairly shitfaced and feeling like a laugh, and flirti…

Its interesting that on the face of it, this would almost be a valid and interesting point, IF it actually centered the feelings of the men affected by loneliness at all. I think the worst thing about intersectionality is it's tendency to suck all the oxygen out of the room whenever it comes up in the context of political discussions. It's one of those things that literally everyone by definition is going to have a slightly different position on based on their individual identity, and it just leads to circular arguments that aren't ever going to produce a consensus until one identity group is able to form a big enough group to dominate the discussion. I can see i…

As someone who suffers with body dysmorphia this topic is real close to my heart. One thing I've noticed with my experience of it is that people react extremely insensitively and inappropriately to any requests for sympathy or help, even medical professionals. A bit late to the party but I was thinking about a common piece of progressive dating advice I've been given that to me, seems actually quite creepy; " just join a primarily female hobby group!" Leaving aside the actual effectiveness of this as a tactic (I don't know many hobby groups that cater to a demographic of 20-30 year old women, most seem to be aimed at the idle middle class and middle aged) it struck me as deepy weird that apparently progressive people think that this a more acceptable …

I'm in Britain myself, and the general culture is just to shrug and go "oh dear, well, what can you do?" to basically everything, which is an attitude that's seriously detrimental to left wing organising, made worse by the importing of American culture war bullshit that doesn't quite apply properly here. It makes communicating with the general public needlessly difficult when publicly we only discuss things that don't matter!

That's a really good observation. A lot of modern leftist thought in my country grew out of the opposition to the Iraq war and before it the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and recent left wing leaders have drawn their legitimacy from being involved with this when it was less politically popular. From previous experience in various left wing campaigns, I can say the main thing that kept me clear of total doomerism is, perhaps surprisingly, staying pessimistic. I've seen the attitude so often that any negativity is "letting the cause down" and it causes activists to have to bubble themselves in a fake version of the world where everyone secretly loves us and we have a vanguard of people just waiting in the wings ready to take to the stage of history and inaugur a new world order based on …

Yes, definitely. One of the most worrying trends I've observed in a lot of new leftists is the degree of image obsession and policing. It started off as unconscious I think; it's difficult to grow up in a very superficial and visual culture and not internalise it to a degree but i've found it often ends up explicitly stated as the movement grows and those people who don't fit the ideal will be pushed to the margins. Yeah that makes sense, I just wonder why as leftists, they aren't interested in debunking it as a cultural trope like they do with other groups. When we discuss the poorer life outcomes for the African American communities in the US, we study historical circumstances and see how they create the material conditions that exist today; slavery, "no blacks need apply", lynchings, Jim Crow, redlining, white flight, assassinations of community leaders, police brutality, the prison industrial complex an…

This is honestly horrendous, a human tragedy on a uncalculable scale reduced to petty point scoring in a gender culture war lead by the most absurdly privileged people in human history. Deeply, deeply demoralizing and concerning for the future of men's advocacy. Humanity should be better than this, I already set my expectations low and I'm still disappointed.

I suspect it is too, but I'd be keen to hear your interpretation!

I've been in many left spaces and the deep dislike for men who are sexually unsuccessful struck me as deeply weird. Whether "incel" or just any guy who was less than brilliantly successful with women, all analysis of class, material conditions and structural inequalities went out of the window and was replaced with a frothing hatred on par with nativist rhetoric around immigration; there was way more hatred towards working class men who struggled with this than there was to our billionaire lords…

As an autistic man, this is really nice to read. Pleasantly surprised how accepting of neurodivergent people this sub is, I've been around a few left wing spaces and unfortunately acceptance is very far from the default setting a lot of the time!

I'm a male vegan and I get really weird interpretations from other people about why I'm vegan. People seem to find it genuinely difficult to understand that I became vegan simply because I like animals (still the most common motivation I believe), and that health/dietary/disciplinary reasons are my main motivations. I wonder they jump to conclusions like that because of our cultural ideas about what men should be like?

I don't consider myself anti feminism, but I specifically describe myself as antifeminist. I don't find a huge issue with a lot of feminism as an idea, but the way a large proportion of people who identify as feminists behave is appalling; my opposition is those individual people, not the ideals they use to cloak their cruel, self serving and social climbing outlook in the guise of progressivism.

Sorry, I don't know enough about trans experiences or trauma to give any authoritative advice, but I'm hoping someone else here might.

Preach, man. In my friendship group of 20 or so, only one of us is dating. The others just seem resigned to their singledom, and try to fill the void in other ways, gadgetry, drugs, work, general consumerism. I've spoken to a few of them about it and it seems to have a subtle but all encompassing demotivating effect, which I can certainly empathise with.

It's an interesting thought for sure. If I could look into the future and I found out I'd never find a long term partner, I'd kill myself without a second thought. A life lived alone just isn't worth the pains to me. I don't know if that's specifically a guy thing though. It brings to mind a woman I used to know. She had some kind of health condition (PCOS maybe?) that caused her to grow body hair in places women don't often grow it. Lots of men found it offputting and she struggled to hold down…

Wait what?! That's seriously upsetting to hear. Why the hell would they do that and how the hell could they justify it without it being news, at least among the ASD community?! That's creepy as hell.

I've had brief periods of doubt, and an almost constant feeling of despair about the state of the movement underpinned by serious misgivings about the quality and motives of large elements of our activist core, but I don't struggle with my ideological commitment. I'm proud to call myself a socialist. I believe that a better world is possible, that we are the only ones who can snatch it from the jaws of environmental degradation, corporate domination and the resurgent and radicalised reactionary …

That's good to hear man. It was genuinely shameful to see, I don't understand how anyone even vaguely progressive could type out that top voted reply, the one that said (roughly) because women in India have a hard time, men of Indian backgrounds should expect prejudice and should accept it quietly, then post it, and still think they're on the side of racial justice.

Yep, I've made a few comments on menslib about this. I would be interested to find out how conscious this is on their part. Like do they hate ASD men as an identity group? Do they have a reflexive, innate hate for certain traits they perceive to be autistic that usual leftist ideology can't overcome? Even when groups are friendly to ASD people, which is not as common as it should be, from what people have told me it seems like there's a fair bit of subtle dehumanization going on, being spoken ov…

I remember that debacle, I'm white and it was just awful and demoralizing to watch so much vitriol, falsehoods, victim blaming and lazy stereotyping flung at fellow men, I can't imagine how bad it would have been to see that kind of stuff from your supposed allies as an Indian man. I'm glad I found this community.

I've posted a few times on r/menslib about this (although the abuse I got wasn't anything like as vicious as what you've been through) and got suprisingly positive feedback, it seems like it's a fairly common experience for leftist men, particularly neurodivergent men and increasingly is beginning to affect black men too. I'm particularly encouraged by the positive response on r/menslib; a few years ago that would have been met with vicious hostility there, but I'm unsure of how to improve lefti…

So someone just linked this sub on r/menslib and I'm really glad they did! This is exactly the sort of community I was looking for. I think they can make useful contributions on an individual level but are going to struggle to make systemic changes, since in general there's not much in the way of systemic critique. I feel it's improved significantly recently too, while there's still the psychos in the comments denigrating men's issues (and they NEVER get banned, go figure) I've found it much les…
