I love the logic that “taking him to the cleaners,” is just about the “baby and their future.” Nothing to do with any personal feelings. So then the assumption is, if you don’t take everything from him, the child will not be provided for, at all? Must be one crappy dad, to have money worth taking but none at all for his child. Obv don’t know the whole story here, but the way vitriol is hidden behind the needs of a child in that statement is not exactly subtle, or novel.

Thanks for posting here. I agree with much of what you say; there’s a lot of mirrored overlap, women (generally not absolutely) think it impossible for men to be marginalized, men (same) think Feminism is a hate movement. Yes, a lot of women have tarnished the movement. Arguably destroyed, there are ppl abusing children and committing crimes and you are the first person I’ve ever heard acknowledging the possibility that Feminism fails to call out such abuses, even backs them when they are hidden…

This is different not only depending on the state, but whether or not the place is public/privately owned, whether there is “a reasonable expectation of privacy,” and whether you are recording video, audio, or both. Read up!

I think this is where you use your discretion instead of making a binary choice. Putting a hidden camera in your car or office is totally reasonable. Lots of people do that for other reasons. You might want to skip the master bedroom tho. While these are useful tools that can be a kind of “break in case of emergency” insurance plan, covert recording devices are creepy, and indeed, can be illegal to use depending on the situation and where you reside. Some states allow one-party consent for audio…

Yea, unfortunately that’s the scary reality. Almost any human is capable of horrible things, and judging ppl based on a gut character read is far from fool proof. But what else can you do? I think in 2022 you could actually bring this up and try to talk openly about it. If you talk in terms of SWIK, how’s this person’s empathy response? Who do they identify with? Are they projecting something about them and trying to get some kind of secondary emotional benefit without the awareness that they ar…

Choose your people wisely, and learn the warning signs. Always be mindful of character, and don’t let people too far in until you are satisfied they are mentally stable and have a moral compass. It takes a certain kind of person to feel that their anger entitles them to hurt others to the point of leveling false accusations. You have to be pretty self-absorbed, have issues with anger, and/or lacking in empathy, and those things get hard to hide in the long term. That’s basically all you can do u…

I’ll take it. It’s well written and acknowledges that there are men who are undeservedly persecuted in today’s world. If she had admitted that her feelings changed after becoming pregnant herself, that would’ve been even more powerful, but I’ll take it. How can we engage more women like this in personal conversation? Great post OP.
/r/MensRights30/01/22 02:52 AM

Bingo. You can’t make a definite call about whether or not is was SA without making at least some assumptions. Sounds like a grey area, probably not, but that doesn’t mean OP’s reaction isn’t valid and it doesn’t mean there wasn’t aggressive/manipulative behavior or various levels of coercion he was dealing with. But I’m am indeed shooting down gas-lightly or invalidating responses bc I’ve experienced that kind of victim-blame before personally; that much I can acknowledge. I am projecting on OP…

I did nothing of the sort. If pointing out that you were being sarcastic about empathy toward another human is playing the victim, then sure, but that’s an extremely weird and convenient definition of “victim,” that we don’t share. I’m not trying to invalidate your emotions; I’m not gas-lighting you. (Big Difference) I’m sharing an observation that your very real and very valid emotions may not be about this post entirely; some of the mix is likely personal to you, and has nothing to do with OP …

I think I understand now. My previous comment could apply to any human and was not an attempt to garner sympathy. If you’ll excuse my lack of tact, you are projecting on me the same way you are on OP; the link is in your head. From here it looks like you want opportunities to victim blame, for whatever secondary personal reason, so you see ppl, “playing the victim,” everywhere.
/r/MensRights24/01/22 01:23 PM

Wait, whaat? If that’s what you get from my last comment, the kaleidoscope you’re using to view the world would be what interests me. How is it even possible to be victimized by a comment?
/r/MensRights24/01/22 12:55 PM
1

Wow. Just trying to support a fellow human, instead of blaming them. Is that really worthy of your sarcasm? Like just not being a jerk somehow means i want to be his therapist. I hope therapy isn’t the only experience with kindness you’ve had. It almost sounds like you are mad at OP for his own problem.
/r/MensRights24/01/22 12:33 PM

Not that clear. OP may have made the choice but it was under pressure. In trauma, what matters most is the experience of the individual. So, if you see trauma but he feels none, he will escape completely unscathed, regardless of what you say or think. Similarly, if you don’t see trauma and OP has trauma responses going (which he does describe), your opinion doesn’t lessen the blow. It’s not that simple. Although it does seem we’re thinking somewhat differently; a binary response to whether or no…

Respecting others experiences is not a waste of time(!), it’s a way to support them. And this wasn’t a personal dig, i am looking for civil discussion. You write about clarity, but I don’t understand what you are saying here. It sounds like you’re saying you are a SA survivor, so you know that OP is not one, but +1 here, so I know that that alone doesn’t qualify you to make that call. It sounds like you are angry or frustrated, but why is unclear to me, so I apologize if it was my comment that m…

I’m somewhat surprised to find this response here, bc while it provides a clear, simplified perspective that may be helpful, there’s no acknowledgement of OP’s personal experience whatsoever. OP writes of shame, feelings of objectification, waking up in the middle of the night, feeling “weak-willed,” (self-blame). Those are reactions to something traumatic. Yes, moving on is the goal, for any survivor. I agree that blowing things out of proportion is the opposite of helpful here, but your commen…

This is a strong point and very easy to overlook. It’s like there’s a responsibility menu that you (feminists) can order from a la Carte, and then everything left gets swept to the other side. That’s not rational; equal rights require equal responsibility.
/r/MensRights18/01/22 09:51 AM

With the amount of data that’s flying around right now 4% is probably the margin of error. It’s not that meaningful as a statistic, certainly not enough to make sweeping conclusions about any one group.

Personally, I don’t relate to the whole gender preference thing at all. I wish I could understand what is going inside your head if you just gave birth and your first reaction is to be upset about the gender. I instantly identify with and want to protect the infant in that story, FROM his mother’s disappointment if necessary. I think so! It specifically spelled out the Motte and Bailey argument typically used to advance a Feminist position while excluding men from equal rights. Great post, and tidy to be able to debunk an entire argument by spotting it instead of letting the person make you play verbal whack-o-mole.

So called “Motte and Bailey” arguments…learned that from this sub and now I see it everywhere. It’s one of the few ways to defend inequality using equality as a premise.

Mod power trip bs. The exact same thing happened to me before for asking about the rules on another sub. Not explaining the rules gives the mods more power, bc in any ambiguous situation they are the mods, so they’re right.

Starting a sub just to oppose another sub is pretty dumb. It’s like placing an ad for the angriest ppl with the most extreme viewpoints. Alas, it does exist, but I share your sentiment that this should really be about equal rights and the convo should involve women who want to engage on equal footing. It would definitely require pretty airtight rules and very heavy moderation, but an inclusive sub such as that would be much more likely to scoop up approachable ppl looking for real discourse. Let…

If your father was a danger and you were too young to understand, it would have been her responsibility to protect you and make the best of that really difficult situation. This being said, and without knowing more, it sounds like your mother was wrong. My mother also similarly demonized my father and made herself out to be a perfect parent. I didn’t know that my father wasn’t a total prick (and that my mother was a liar) until late 30’s. My dad is no peach, but we do get along these day, so she…

Thanks for posting this. It’s really validating to see what we already know from anecdotes and personal experience documented in actual psychological studies. It’s messed up that ppl deny this is a phenomenon, bc I think it’s pretty intuitive; we need to believe mothers are benevolent or society becomes a horror show. Most likely people that’ve already accepted that justification and repeat it out of denial. “Well, that’s what I was told when I/my kid was born, and now it’s permanent, and the alternative is too horrible to accept…so it must be more hygienic.” Anyone still repeating that argument is blowing dust around for their own benefit; it’s echoes of the last generation’s denial.

“It’s more hygienic” is totally debunked, and was incredibly stupid to begin with. That’s like shaving your kids head bc it’s healthy for their scalp - it’s not total BS, but you are totally missing the point. Foreskin is functional and has nerves who’s only job is to send pleasure signals, similar to a clitoris but much more spread out. Having sex is a different experience, for both partners, and circumcision changes that before you even know what it is. Sure, cultural norms change how we view …

Yes, practically and pragmatically there are good reasons to stay out of one. But life can feel empty too. If you’re in a situation where you need to be able to take financial risks and want to limit the effects to just yourself, if you’re very busy or traveling a lot, if you’re uncertain about your employment or education opportunities and need to make big life choices without the need to compromise, etc. Of course there are relationships in which both parties pay their equal share, but even ou…

Ppl confuse catharsis with ideology. “It feels good to ram my opinion down your throat, and I’m right, so I don’t need to listen to the response.” That’s venting masquerading as discourse. Raising good points only interferes; the real motivation is how good it feels to slam someone, and ideological arguments allow you to do that in a general way without having to be responsible for your own specific issues/behavior/feelings.

Yea, that’s unfortunately all 100% real. It’s frustratingly obvious but the climate is such that you can’t really get acknowledgement outside of groups like this one. But just because terms like that are not (yet) in a socially acceptable zone doesn’t mean that people aren’t doing those exact things. All the time. I’m just going to say it: women-splaining is absolutely a thing. And you’re right, I don’t know any way of dealing with it other than nodding and backing away. It’s a one-way interaction based entirely on assumptions, but any attempt to make it 2-way puts you in the wrong.

What I’d do is ask her if she has any food allergies, or cuisines she doesn’t like. Then pick a place that YOU like. At least that way, you’ve displayed the thoughtfulness and initiative she seems to want from you, and you’re offering something about yourself (I like this place bc…) There’s always a chance she won’t like it, but there’s not much else you can do without her telling you more. Maybe pick a place that’s near a second choice if you want to go above and beyond. Keep it relatively chea…

Thanks for posting this. It’s not fine at all. But victim blaming men is unfortunately all but ubiquitous; I too know this from personal experience. Survivor here also and I had to seek out a support group that was for men only to be able to share my experience and have it validated. I have found that flipping the genders on my abuse story instantly makes it more relatable. Statistically speaking, 1 in 4 or 5 men have experienced SA of some kind. That means roughly 30 million men (conservatively…

Great post; this has bugged me since i first found this sub. IMHO 1. Create space to allow women into the conversation. 2. Keep it specific and avoid generalizations when making points. Write about situations in which an individual’s rights have been left by the wayside, instead of arguing about the big picture, concepts, and ideology. 3. Separate the venting from the real talk. I’m glad you asked; you’ve definitely got the wrong idea if you think that that stuff bothers me. I unequivocally support everything in your list. You’ve asked a direct question so you’ll get a very direct answer: I was sexually abused as a child, and that abuse was done with feminist language - basically taught to me as feminism itself. As an adult I’ve long since rejected this, but I’m alarmed at the amount of pure anger and projection I see in the name of gender rights (both men’s and women’s…

Frankly, we need a huge population cliff. Unhappy marriages are nothing when compared to an entire generation of children that the world is not capable of supporting. We largely ignore this in developed countries, we think only about whether we want children for ourselves, and the global problem of mass migration is reduced to political debates about immigration policy. But the reality is, people are dying, starving, and running for their lives in droves across the globe. I don’t see less childr…

Yes and no. First, as a man, I agree with a lot of the posters here that courts are often exceedingly harsh on men in divorce proceedings. I also think that needing money to “maintain lifestyle,” is not a good argument, even if it is a valid legal one. You were wealthy before, and that’s why you’re entitled more money? Doesn’t pass the sniff test, especially at that order of magnitude. My impression is it’s mostly a spiteful money grab; same place lots of divorces end up. On the other hand, if s…

Bam. No one says that nearly enough, and those are solid points. If we create a legal system (or are trying to) that is supposed to meet the needs of victims that are in shock, are experiencing dissociation, fragmented memories, and more, that system itself will be vulnerable and needs to be protected from exploitation to function properly. Every false accusation makes that system harder to access and less effective for real victims. On a singular level, if just one cop hears a few false allegat…

Yea, I think there will have to be an online component for the needle to move at all these days. I, personally, am not opposed to punitive measure in the extreme cases, but finding a way to apply the law in such a way that it doesn’t affect real victims struggling to come forward is difficult, so that argument will always be there, and it’s a strong one. No matter how subtly worded and carefully applied, it’s likely some powerful people will find ways to exploit it. You may be right, and I may b…

When women make false allegations of rape, it not only harms the man they are targeting, but it takes resources away from real victims, and further complicates a legal system that has historically struggled (and failed) to meet rape victims where they are so they can get access to support, protection, and effective prosecution. This type of behavior should be concerning to both men and women. I understand the viewpoint that any punitive measures would discourage real victims from coming forward.…

Another unnecessarily gendered skew. Sure, you can pull out statistics and make a somewhat reasonable case that women are more adversely affected by poverty. But none of that means that men are not. It should be obvious that these are not mutually exclusive. As said, the only reason I can think of to manufacture content like this is marketing. Sadly, the target demographic will give more money if they can believe it goes to women and girls only. I see this as more of a societal symptom than as e…

That’s such blatant cake-and-eat-it-too bullshit: Let’s be empowered!…unless criminal responsibility comes up…then helpless? I guess that’s okay after all. But only this time. A pedo is a pedo. Gender doesn’t mitigate the damage done in the lives they destroy, so it shouldn’t mitigate their prison sentences either.

I’ve gotten and sent plenty of these messages, usually after driving long distances and/or traveling in the snow. It doesn’t prove danger, only that someone is concerned about you. Women clearly face different dangers, but men are not immune to things like dangerous road conditions.

Or not being entitled to it. In my family, once you hit puberty and became a sexually mature male, you were evil and irredeemable. The concept of adult maleness was met with automatic hatred and aggression. Your point is spot on. We often talk about feminism as a women’s issue, or toxic masculinity as a topic that only relates to males. Feminism has obviously affected men, and often females play into promoting toxic masculinity, shaming men for being emotionally open, rewarding them for stoicism…

Point very well made. But are we really going to get anywhere with THEM? I consider many of those people lost and beyond salvation. This is by far the biggest missing piece in many of the arguments I’ve seen recently, on any thread. They hide it from themselves. Calling all your angry feelings an ideology is the perfect way to not admit to yourself how filled with hate you actually are. But I think it’s obvious to most ppl looking in from the outside. I’d actually be interested to see a survey of women that spout that toxic crap. How self-aware are they? Is there a trauma history? You’re parsing irrelevant concepts. Generalized catharsis is not going away, and it shouldn’t have to. Women say “men suck,” sometimes, but if it’s venting and not directed toward me, I don’t feel offended. I can also usually tell from context (in-person) whether the generalization is all inclusive sexism, or just a hyperbolic emotional expression, like an expletive. Correlation does not establish causation. The idea that one parent is abusive is not mutually exclusive with the other being abusive. In fact, they are correlated. You could have a male abuser convicted, and the women still failing to meet standards of care or arousing suspicion of CPC, so your numbers don’t necessarily reflect bias. If they do, it’s not enough to generalize anyway, bc as mentioned, the family court crowd is not an accurate cross section of our society. I’d be interested to see …

Wrongful convictions doesn’t mean there are no rightful ones. Or unsolved/unprosecuted cases. Care to cite? I’m going off old info I remember learning maybe 10-15 years ago. Ever notice how carefully a nurse cradles the head of a newborn? Newborns have virtually no muscles in their neck; they can’t even hold their own head up at first. This is actually common, or at least it used to be. You can easily kill an infant by shaking it too hard, and unfortunately, frustrated parents who don’t know better sometimes do this.

There is a certain, almost war-on-drugs style hubris I often see when ultra-conservative or very religious people talk about prostitution laws. The argument that it’s going to happen anyway, and it’s better to have the opportunity to regulate it, protect people, etc., is beyond the scope of denial for some people. If it’s so jarringly incompatible with their world view, it just won’t compute for them.

It’s civil though, no? Are you referring to slander/libel? Exploiting rape laws to manipulate men is pretty low hanging fruit with few consequences the way it is now. My ex threatened to hurt herself and file a rape report when I caught her cheating and asked her to move out. It would’ve been really great if there was some law protecting me in that situation.

This should be a strict qualifier in my dating life. Relationship material must mean you have or have had a somewhat balanced, healthy relationship with your primary male care-takers . Unfortunately, girls with daddy issues are amazing in bed and suck at relationships, so I tend to get it all wrong.

No one seems to notice or care that barring all men to avoid their “toxicity” is blatant negative stereotyping. Hating men can become toxic in and of itself. I grew up with misandrists and they’re pretty much all alone now. Even their female friends couldn’t handle their hate beyond a point. I get it, guys can have a guys night or whatever, girls want to just be with other women sometimes. Totally normal to want a women’s night. Just please make up a better reason that isn’t an outright insult (…

I hate this logic and I see it everywhere. You can say anything, no matter how horrible or skewed, about men’s issues and someone will always, without fail, say, “but women had it worse….” Blah blah blah. Okay, so there are starving children all over the world. And they have it much worse than you. So you shouldn’t get to eat, right? That’s your logic?? Why ppl gravitate to this argument without seeing how flimsy it is is beyond me. I guess it comes down to ppl getting worked up and getting tunn…

+1. If I followed this rule I’d never engage anyone, bc I’ve heard literally every person I know talk out their ass from time to time. Especially right now in this country, people take things personally really quickly. If you can show that you’re not being aggressive or confrontational, some of them calm down.

What a stupid cliche. Ya know, being homophobic isn’t especially fashionable these days either. So she’s okay coming across as a hater if she gets to take a man down a peg? For connecting at a party? That’s toxic AF; I’d bet money she just felt insecure bc no one was talking to her. Ppl blab on about toxic masculinity but I don’t hear much discussion about the why and how men are socially punished for emotional display and rewarded for stoicism. Ladies, you play your part. If you didn’t, men sim…

Yes! The bigger purpose (for me, at least) is to create dialog. Policing misogyny would require defining it, and that’s next to impossible here. We can’t have rules on a men’s forum that forbid talking about women that in certain ways (unlesss we are talking about pure hate speech and 4 letter words, in wish case I’d support the ban), or men won’t feel free to express themselves. Guys are going to vent, and those generalizations will at times extend to all women when they are in a high-stress po…

First of all, I appreciate the fact that you are on here, and I personally would welcome any women that actually wants to participate in discussion on r/mensrights. But a few things: I think most men on here take it as a given that in all of time, the suffering of men will never compare to the suffering women have endured. No one I’ve seen is making that argument, so detailing the history of the suffering of women is beside the point here and basically TLDR (or rather TL -Already Know). A lot of…

I agree with pretty much all of that. The word “worship” bugs me a bit bc taken literally it does kinda imply servitude and/or non-equality. Preceding it with “mutual” shades the meaning differently. Taken in the romantic sense, meaning no gesture is too grand for your S.O., and you’d go to great lengths to make them happy - agreed. This should be a natural impulse when you’re with someone you care about. But I don’t think everyone is like you or I. Some people think more about what they can get…

I think you should reread the last paragraph. Generalizing is different than speaking in absolutes. You are doing the latter, and conflating it with the former. Date women with better self-esteem. (I’m trying to do the same)

Thanks for the compliment but who exactly am I being passive aggressive towards? All the other women posting here? You do realize you’re posting on r/mensrights, correct? Dudes commiserate on here...your reactivity doesn’t make my comment passive-aggressive. It wasn’t meant for or aimed at you. I know I don’t think like most men. I’m pretty sure I don’t think like most humans. And we know. We know it was bad for women. I’m not invalidating your comment, just questioning your motivation for posti…

Yea, that’s absolutely the point. If you’re far enough along that S.O. is a relevant term, you (she) should be past the testing phase. If relationships were a vaccine, this would be like continuing trials after injecting yourself. It’s irrational for sure, but some women just don’t realize that every time they push the button and get the response they are looking for, they are actually draining their S.O. and (quite paradoxically) weakening the relationship in which they are attempting to feel s…

I’d love to read this. It seems fairly innocuous - a lack of self-awareness - but it’s strikes at the root of toxic feminism: the idea that females are the only protagonists, and it’s “us vs them.” Even the BLM movement does not do this. There may be anti-police rhetoric, talk about gov’t not being diverse enough, etc., but no one is acting like black people are flawless protagonists to the exclusion of all others. Feminism = equality as a goal, improving how society works for women so that it’s…

I don’t date women that can’t cook anymore. It’s not because I’m sexist and I expect her to cater to me. But I’m tired of women that expect me to cater to them. And since we’ll be sharing meals, it’d be nice if she could help. (Or have an insatiable love of washing dishes...oh wait, that’s sexist, even tho I’m the one that cooked in this hypothetical.) Maybe we could even take turns doing nice things for each other. I could even...wait for it....make HER a sandwich sometimes. I think the sandwic…

As maddening as it is, this type of female behavior is discussed pretty thoroughly in books about attraction theory and pick-up game. Basically, from that perspective, women test men to see how they react. Playing hard to get, pushing on boundaries, trying to make you jealous, all fall into that category, and I think they just call them “challenges.” In lieu of dangerous quests that would’ve proved your valor centuries ago, women place obstacles in our way, and that could actually be an indicati…

I was trying to be respectful but all the “red pill” stuff just makes no sense to me. The entire movement seems to me like some kind of pseudo-religion for the disenfranchised. I can see how ppl get pulled in; it offers (false) hope and some version of a purpose. The language around it doesn’t concern me too much, bc it seems just another way of dressing up old ideas to obscure and (esp) conflate them. It all seems “deep,” but every time I pull the thread I’m instantly confronted with crazy soun…

Good for you. Sooo good for you. If you stayed with her I would’ve suggested taking her on a strip club date the two of you, just to play around and see the level of comfort and if she’s all talk...but it sounds like you’ve already figured that out. Sometimes “you’re what I want,” means “I like the fact that I have power in this relationship.” For some women, feeling secure must include having the upper hand. Sounds like she liked herself with you (ie freedom to abuse the double standard) more t…

Ah, I don’t do much deep diving in “red pill” culture so that’s the very first time I’ve heard that phrase. From you describe, it sounds like it’s essentially a less extreme way of saying, “don’t lose your shit”(?) But more vague and slogany. It is way more fun to say, I’ll give you that. This is where it gets interesting - does having the freedom to express the full range of emotions mean that you will be a total mess? This is another false dichotomy. Personally, and as a man, I agree with you …

Your comment is a case in point. Unless it’s completely ambiguous sarcasm that no one gets. “Maintain your frame” is a new one for me, but it’s no different from “man up” or “suck it in” or any other such BS.

Love drives everyone mad. And every human has capacity for love. Thankfully, despite the plethora in this thread, I don’t see a double standard there. I think you might benefit from taking a look at the women in your life (past and preset) and reevaluating your norms. I grew up with really skewed ideas about women and relationships and I had to do the same. 15 years ago I thought men didn’t have the right to respect in relationships and were supposed to martyr themselves, committing unconditiona…

Sounds like verbalizing equal boundaries would be helpful. I had to get into this in detail with my ex. If it’s okay for you to flirt, is it okay for me to flirt? If you can accept a drink from a guy, does that mean I can buy one for a girl? Where is the line? Basically I ended up with equal footing - the only hard boundary being passing phone numbers or changing location, so, I had to get used to my girlfriend flirting and accepting drinks. But I did it too, both in front of her and when i was …

Anyone interested in the origins of toxic masculinity should pay close attention to this post. Mostly, men can do wtf they want. The problem is that men pay a social price for expressing those things publicly. This is a perfect example of a man being belittled and punished because he had the courage to express his feelings in public. (Rather than turn it into some kind of anger or stoicism.) It’s really rather infantile when you think about it (“haha - willy’s crying”...) nowadays we call those …

Nature vs nurture is a phrase that always bugged me bc it’s a false dichotomy - you can’t escape your genes, and you can’t escape your environment when you are a child. It’s unavoidably both, and absolutely very nuanced in the details of how they interact, but no way around it - they with both have an impact.

And if she intentionally hurts herself and then files a false rape report? I assure you, that’s a terrifying threat, probably enough to shake you out of that opinion if you went through it yourself. Big muscles would actually hurt in that situation, Bc ppl would look at you and assume you’re a brute. You don’t get it. Hitting isn’t the only kind of abuse. Abuse may take on different forms, and the patterns will be different from men to women and vice versa, but (+1) abuse is abuse.

Why insist on false dichotomies?? There are many ways one can abuse (or kill) another that don’t require any physical strength or prowess. “She was wrong to attack her partner....but” STFU We don’t have to disqualify men to offer a women support. Completely unnecessary, and yet another example of how black and white thinking F*s everything up.

I think we should just invert the purpose of Father’s Day. The assumption that all adults are thankful of their parents is almost suffocating. If you had a great dad, then sure, spend some time with him, send him a card. But if you’re a father totally dropped the ball as a parent (you know who you are), you should use the day to act like a “dad” - call your kids, tell them you’re sorry for all the fuckups, and that you care. Level with them, make an effort to connect, be honest...ya know...be a …
