Good article. While it might seem inconceivable that an innocent person would take such a dichotomy seriously, the harsher sentence was made to appear inevitable because of his race... I think not only was it his race, but it was also because he was accused of rape. It's a crime about which I've seen people say that the accused should be guilty until proven innocent (on various forums and reddit).
