That's true, you can deceive yourself, but you can't trick your conscience (I've found out the hard way myself). Something will gnaw on you for the rest of your life, even if you refuse to look at it.

"You have to live in your very special own reality to believe that people telling the truth will be more trusted in a system where lying holds no penalties." Although the media (and most of christian religion) would like to promote the idea that people are all, at the root, depraved savages: liars, thieves, and murderers, I would prefer to live in a reality where truth is rewarded and valued. Such a reality does exist, perhaps not in plain sight.

Telling a lie that destroys the rest of someone's life. If I were her I'd be down on my knees thankful that I got caught. It would be a terrible thing to have to carry around on your conscience for the rest of your life.
