This is an interesting post that is educational to unpack. This'll be long; in-person I would be asking questions, but here I'm going to be more critical. I think all this kind of comments are either sexist people trying to rationalise their sexism I think this is a core claim, but I am struggling to find anything supporting it in your points, which I'll get to. I think you might be taking it as axiomatic that ideological opposition towards feminism is sexist, or maybe your argument is "since it…

I think something related to this has been one of the biggest mindfucks of all of my relationships: my ex partner would read me not panicking as me being bad in emergencies, even when objectively its not the case. Often they would insult or emasculate me after my steadfastness wasn't somehow an exceptiion for them. Like, if my partner has to pee really bad, im not running a red light at a complicated intersection because in all my rational male brain I would prefer they piss themselves than us b…

I really don't think I can articulate any better what my objection is, and none of this reply seems to engage whatsoever with it. I do think your response is a reasonable kneejerk reaction to someone expressing bigotry. It strikes me as defensive and accusatory which both make sense in that context. You outline sitting the gf down, asking her why she believes it, dismissing trauma if it comes up, lecturing her, and then say that if she doesn't get it she's stupid. I do not think I am mischaracte…

You're conflating two distinct things. You can challenge someone's beliefs without judging or shaming them as a person. Shaming someone looks like words like "stupid". Evaluating their argument is a different process. If there is a belief of yours I disagree with, its the apparent idea that if someone does not adopt your worldview that there is something deficient about them. Even practically, studies tend to show that using logic and counterexamples alone is so ineffective at changing most peop…

All I'm saying is that I personally don't think its healthy to need judgement as a prereq to set boundaries, which is what OP needs. Cults tend to say real similar things ("if they disagree with your pitch then its evidence of their moral failing" type stuff). I see this as a fragile framework rhetorically, spiritually and epistemically but not everyone does. I don't need to believe my opposition has to have a defect to not be persuaded, and I feel confident that there are topics or blindspots I…

I'm sorry but they way you write that if she says she is raped, ignore, comes off as so callous. If she's their partner and this is the first time trauma comes up there are supportive things to do (even if eventually the relationship may need to end). And then this narrative like "if you present reasonable facts then she's either not smart, traumatized or a bad person" is completely ignorant of how biases work, or people work tbh. Look, I'm all for the conclusion here: we shouldn't advocate bein…

Support networks shatter for men in ways that are hard for people with better networks to believe. I had four therapists through the abuse. One tried to get me to profess my love to the abuser after they discarded me because they wanted me to save them. When I got a new one, they said what I experienced wasnt trauma. When I tried to convince them it was, one argument I made was that the person who dated them before tried to kill themselves and dropped out of school permenently. "So what, they we…

My abusive relationship was dismissed as "stop silencing women" (by existing I guess)

I've become hyperaware after trauma. One partner sexually abused me. They went on to explain that it was due to me not finishing in bed, which meant I was the abusive one, because men are abusive. I told them I felt shame; they said good. They were taking testosterone at the time; they said that it was no wonder men rape with how they felt. They lamented that sex was somehow less violent to men. I still have flashbacks and wonder if I was raped (they had set a timer for me to finish and made me …

Yeah, now that you mention it "anger is the only emotion men are allowed to show" sounds like smuggling in misandry into a conversation about male suffering, which is a pattern I see a lot: like "Oh, men aren't allowed to show emotion, huh? But men are angry, violent monsters so they're allowed ro show that aren't they?" It reminds me of how conversations about men's "emotional flaws" always has to come back to men: "men are emotionally stunted because of football coaches. Men learn not to liste…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
