As Freud says, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

Go to therapy, practice grounding techniques and self care, and get hobbies

I do t think I have a specific favorite in book on the topic of atheism, but if we broader out a bit, I like Irvin Yalom's "Staring at the Sun" about death anxiety, existentialism, and what drives people to act the way they do.

I've read through most of these (and Sam Harris, was he mentioned?), and definitely agree with the comment about not wanting dogma from the other side being shoved down my throat either. That being said, these authors always give me something thought provoking to chew on.

Talk therapy would be more helpful or a combo of talk therapy and pills. There are many different kinds of therapies and therapists. If you don't like the classic psychoanalysis or watered down psychodynamic therapy, try someone who takes a cognitive-behavioral or evidence-based approach.

I really want to second the specific questions thing. Depression can feel overwhelming and amorphous, so amorphous questions can become overwhelming. Asking specifics or giving specific options can be great manageable footholds, like "do you want company or do you want to be alone right now?" Or "do you want chicken or tacos for dinner?" --- breaking things down into manageable chunks as much as possible. That being said-- you and your SO are in a really rough spot, and I wish I had a solution f…

1 - I’m a fan of Freud’s saying that “mental health is the ability to work well and to love well,” because all my life I heard about and worked towards the former, but I only learned later in life how important the latter is. 2 - I don't remember! We had a lot of pets and moved a lot too. 3 - Austenland is my guilty pleasure movie for when I need some mind-cotton-candy. Cloudburst is cute too.

It still amazes me that being kind to your SO isn't common sense, especially in public, ESPECIALLY at someone else's special day.

There are so many branches of feminism that I find it impossible to respond to the question. Id recommend the Libertarian Athiest Podcast's episode from July 29 2015 on feminism to learn more about why I say that. I dont think the second wave fully realized its mission both here in the States and abroad. My understanding of the third wave is that it represents a critical response to the philosophies underlying second wave feminism and that the new gender stuff is labeled either post-feminism or …

Haha...luckily my SO was very pragmatic about higher ed, got an almost full ride, and graduated with manageable debt. I wish I could say the same for me :-/

I can't help but wonder how the weekend would have been different on her own stress levels if instead of stewing she had approached the subject with an open mind...maybe she would have discovered a new interest or a hobby she could share with her partner or even the experience of understanding foreign material as a brain training exercise. I may be biased bc I work with people, but you never know when even just a small amount of info will come in handy at work with colleagues or clients.

Last week I prepped homemade instant miso soup bowls with sesame roasted bok choi and Mai fun noodles-- great office lunch! This week I'm having sweet potatoes with salmon and spinach salad for my lunches and I made my SO Asian chicken spinach salad. She's having BBQ shredded chicken for dinners, and I made myself a big pot of lentils. My SO has always been a picky eater but wants to try new foods in a quest to build healthy habits this summer. We tried tempeh yesterday and it was a go! I made m…

German grammar is a pain but the actual words/language are easy to pick up. If you aren't shy about making mistakes, you could pick the basics up quickly with some self study and maybe a course or two.

Back when I was cooking for just me, I also did the prep extra and freeze trick :-) I still do it for certain aromatics that come in much bigger batches than will ever be used all at once, like ginger, scallions, and some fresh herbs. I'm still making the transition from planning for one to planning for two, and this was a really helpful read :-)

What do you like rondo that you can do while commuting to carve out me-time? During grad school a friend and I shared a small room that we rented from an older couple who had a near constant slew of family and guests and community events in their home. I was in school for a people-profession, and I'm a shy introvert, and I didn't even have a closet to call my own. The only me-time I had between work and school and a two-hour commute was the commute. I downloaded podcasts and audiobooks from my l…

I like to prep my lunches-- hers are so easy that I just assemble them before leaving for work :-) That was a great post-- thanks for the recommendation! I linked over to the binder post too because my girlfriends desire to get into healthy routines has got me thinking about routines as well and how much I'd like to get a cleaning routine on "autopilot" so to speak, and ditto for other logistical household things so that when my girlfriend and I both get home from work we can spend more time wit…

This is such great and well written advice, not just within the context of a relationship but also with friends, at work, when someone inevitably gets your order wrong... really for any moment of your day. Being mindful of emotions, worries, thoughts is a learned skill nowadays and it takes character to be able to sit with the distress they sometimes cause without acting on them. Identifying unhelpful thoughts, tolerating the accompanying emotions, and learning how that impact your behavioral im…

So you do your research and write your menu BEFORE running it by your SO? I like that flow a lot-- that way it's also not a surprise when we have XYZ for dinner, etc. and gives the opportunity for her to veto anything she's just not feeling. I will definitely be mindful of planning for backup leftovers and look into that price checker thing. Thanks so much!

I batch prepped and froze my lunches last week-- I forgot aid be out of the office for half the week so I have a half a week of lunches this week ready to go. I assemble miso soup instant noodle bowls and add hot water at work. This week I used: red miso paste, Mai fun rice noodles, cubed tofu, sliced carrot, scallions, fresh grated ginger, and bok choi roasted with soy sauce and sesame oil. I defrost over night and add hot water at the office, put the lid on, swish around until the noodles are …

I used to HATE doing dishes, and before I grew out of that, or even when I'm tired and just don't want to do them, I will talk myself that I only have to do one or two items that I really need. Once those are done, and my hands are wet, I tell myself just one more. I do this for chores too. Once one is done and I'm in the cleaning groove, I just add one more.

I've seen people make morning playlists that play for exactly how much time they need to get ready (so you know it's time to get out of the shower when Beyoncé starts blasting). It could be fun to have a similar cleaning playlist since most songs run in the 3 minute range give or take!

Turn laundry day into a race against the clock. See how much food you can prep for the week, rooms you can tidy, chores you get done before the clock runs out and it's time to put the clothes in the dryer. If you're like me and always want to be absorbing content, put on a podcast or audiobook while you work/clean-- cleaning time becomes self-care/me time! When going from room to room, bring at least one thing with you that needs to go that way too, ex. On your way in the door, bring along the c…

I didn't know moisturizing sprays existed. That sounds quick and easy enough for even me to use. Do you have a specific product you recommend?

I wrote my undergrad thesis on this book! Isabella Beeton's actual life isn't quite as perfect as you paint re: Mr. Beeton, but her publications took the world by storm! She got her start with the Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine before writing her book, which has been revised and reissued many times-- even into the 20th century. If you can get your hands in copies of the magazine, let me know!!!

I have very similar snacking habits from the sound of it. I also have gluten-triggered IBS (waiting to find out if it's a full blown allergy). One of my favorite substitution snacks is a chopped up Granny Smith apple dipped in peanut butter-- it fills my sweet, hearty, easy snacking needs but is better than cookies or crackers, etc. When I eat it with a cup of herbal tea, the volume of the water, fiber of the apple, and fat\protein of the PB keep me going for a long time!
