You know I don't understand the need for constant headphone use. I don't like shutting out the world around me, and I like to hear potential hazards such as bicycles and cars. I'm not even one to start conversations, but I do like to hear what people around me are chattering about. IMO it cheapens the music to just have it on all the time anyway.

That's why I don't say hi unless we make eye contact. I've stopped avoiding eye contact when walking around, so it's awkward if I don't say hi.

I figure a lot of people don't even realize you're saying hi to them or they get nervous. I'm giving people the benefit of tje doubt that they aren't trying to blow me off. Especially if I say hi before eye contact is made.

I don't see a problem with adding people on Facebook. If I meet someone cool IRL and have a chat or two with them, I add them on Facebook. It's turned into something that can be used as a conversation starter among the people I see. If I see that someone posted pictures from a concert, vacation, or posts something interesting or funny, later on or the next day I have something different than "How about that weather?" to start a conversation with. Like "Hey, I saw a couple of your photos from Bea…

If you live by a big university or college, there are typically a lot of events that aren't just for students. Near me there are various public lectures & talks by big name people, large and small music performances (like an audience of no more than 100 people), festivals...
