Exactly this - it wasn't like she had gotten a call from a stranger and didn't know her son's condition. I could understand her reaction if she thought he was lying in a ditch bleeding to death and this was her last opportunity to save him. He called her, said he was in an accident and needed the insurance card. She, being drunk (or maybe drunk and naturally dramatic) got into her car and drove. Playing the "but my son was in a wreck" card doesn't really apply here.

I feel for you, but in this circumstance it seems warranted. This guy did not seem to be at fault in the divorce, seems to be an attentive and caring father to his kids (their grandkids/nieces/nephews). I think that is the main link here.
