The horseshoe theory continues to apply. The most zealous of either seem to be two sides of the same coin.

Poor sex ed? So what you're saying is that without school these folks don't know where babies come from? They don't know to wear a condom? Sort of. All the myths about what "can't" get you pregnant (there are a lot of them), etc. Education isn't just about what is taught to you, too. A big part of it is teaching you how to teach yourself (e.g. research papers). Just look at how a lot of IT people get away with being glorified Google search typists, since people cannot or will not do it themselve…

Yeah, that's kinda how I feel, honestly. The caricature of Batman that the female character draws at the end isn't an analogue to the female characters at all for the most part. Most of them look fierce rather than, um, doe-eyed like that Batman drawing? I guess that's the best way of putting it...

Does the child have a right to both parents or does the father have a right to waive responsibility? And right to privacy isn't even the worst transgression. If a woman doesn't want to provide the real father, she could make some other dude miserable for awhile (waste of his time, and state time/money). If she just doesn't know/remember, then what do you do? Not to mentioned if the woman was raped. Here is something pretty relevant to MR: if she got special consideration for the child being from…

And on the womens' end it gets overwhelming. I live in a big city, so numbers are on my side and, even as a due, this was bound to happen: at one point I had like 4 conversations going and it was overwhelming. I suddenly knew what the women went through all the time. It really sucks on both ends, as much as it might feel worse on ours with the lack of validation. My advice: It's a numbers game. Personally I like sites similar to OKCupid because the questions can rule out deal breakers with minim…

To start with, I believe pregnant, unmarried women should be legally compelled to identify the father. There are so many things wrong with this. Right to privacy, for one. Not to mention that it might discourage women from seeking medical attention, much as limiting access to medical abortion procedures leads women to seek unsafe services.

/u/geniice is responding to If mom refuses to identify dad, she should be cited. Where a woman would be compelled. Women are already required to provide a father's name to get access to government aid. This is contingent on applying for aid. No one is forcing you to apply for aid.

In that case, it sounds like your issue is more one of "where would I even meet someone with similar interests" rather than lack of dating success. Have you tried online dating?

You'll need to ask someone who actually advocates that, and/or can tell you what would feel sexy vs. power fantasy as a female reader/gamer. My actual opinion is that the whole thing is much ado about nothing. Most of the female characters in DC comics (which I read) nowadays tend to have depth and NOT be props any more than the male characters. There are a few criticisms I can get behind (Amanda Waller being ret-conned into mainstream aesthetics) but they are unrelated to this topic.

You asked what the reasoning was. If you want to give a snarky response in lieu of critically thinking about in order to debate people who unequivocally believe that, then that's your choice.

It's hard when the situation is like that, but base as little of your self-esteem as possible in dating. I only am going off your comment below, but you might want to rethink your definition of casual sex, too. You can have sex soon after meeting someone, not be in a relationship, but still be moving towards one. If you're not giving any reciprocation of sexual energy because you're holding out for relationship cues first, then you're definitely going to come off as "friend" rather than "somethi…

The reasoning would be: As an object of desire for viewing pleasure. Athletic ability is something admired in a different way. "Look how awesome and accomplished this person is." NBA players are also more athleticism than height. The fit male characters are there to meet the male players' power fantasy, where you are playing as a virile character or something. As someone who isn't regularly attracted to men, I can't really say one way or the other on male figures as objects of desire, but that's…

Gonna have to disagree on all accounts. Speaking from retail experience, not only do the men's clothes tend to be higher quality than the women's clothes (with commensurate price increase), but there are plenty of options for standing out. The men's clothes might be more, "standardized," so to speak, in terms of construction, but, for all the variety, I just don't find women's wear to stand out that much. Granted, this could be due to the time spent on male fashion vs the lack of time spent on f…

These statements aren't at odds with each other. Agree/disagree with her stance all you want, but she is still being internally consistent in her thoughts. Makes me feel sick reading those responses. Actions like this make me think of how one of the old time Feminist leaders, Betty Friedan, had to make a statement about behavior like this: 'To suppress free speech in the name of protecting women is dangerous and wrong,' says Friedan. What they don't seem to understand is that the problem isn't rape convictions; it's rape cases even going to trial. The way our justice system representatives choose to pursue cases is what they should be focusing on. It's lucrative for a DA to pursue a drug arrest on some poor ass minority for a gram of marijuana (where the DEA will also give them a bonus because drug seizure) since it's easy to convict. A rape case where there is a lot of grief, ambiguity, and no government kickback? Not so mu…

Huh, there really isn't any info on this except for a few websites. Nothing on the police department's findings/evidence besides them finding the officers involved non-culpable, and nothing on the status of his federal suit against the police department (even if the department claims no wrong-doing, I suspect a federal suit involves its own investigation by federal agents). They had a warrant for his arrest. I'm not a lawyer, let alone one for Ohio, but I suspect the process for the violation of a restraining order is not necessarily jail time pre-investigation, and that he was charged with resisting arrest as part of being jailed, not the initial reason for arrest. The police need a reason to arrest you in the first place, if that reason is bullshit or none existent then I think you have every bloody right to resist arrest because they shouldn't even be arresting …

It's also confounded by definitions. Not all states will even say men can be raped by women, and sometimes anal penetration between is simply referred to as, "non-consexual deviant sexual acts." The statement of, "men that are raped are more likely to be raped repeatedly" is probably true when you consider that many male victims are juvenile offenders in prison that are violated by staff or fellow inmates. So yeah, graphic rape will send me to the door I will admit, becoming a bit of a fuddy duddy I suppose. Then it becomes a personal choice to excise such scenes from your viewing experience. Finding it uncomfortable doesn't make it bad; it being a promotion of something negative would make it bad. Feeling uncomfortable isn't bad; trying to proscribe something for others because it makes you feel uncomfortable is bad. A stance like yours drew me to MR, actually. After consideration, I realized that every gendered issue has a complementary problem for both sexes (eg MR is for paternity rights; this supports the notion that women are more than baby/homemakers, and should not be seen as such in our legal system) and that responding with "well, I have X problem and THAT is worse than your complaint!" is a fool's game because nobody wins. As another perspective: when I played wow there was a woman among our guild officers. She was a good officer, IMO, but after awhile, she started having issues with people not taking her orders seriously. None of the male guild officers had this problem. AFAIK she also wasn't shown any favoritism by the guild. This instance aside, I saw women receive treatment like aetheralloy describes in general when I played WoW.

Wow, thank you for sharing that. When someone goes off the deep end like that, I always wonder what their motivations are. Self-righteousness only takes one so far, and it sounds like your boss was a sociopath that needed control, as well. That's also quite insane that no one had the decency to stand up on your behalf during all of this. With the job market, that was just the perfect storm of shit. I'm sorry you had to go through all of that.

See reactionaries such as shitredditsays: if anything, they attack women who defend mra/egalitarian stances that defend men even more. If you add something like that, which changes it from a counterattack to a rhetorical device, then it would be more effective. The crazy thing is it would still be taken as an attack, because "false rape accusation" isn't even in the vocabulary of some people =/.

Some of them are. Others are those that simply perpetuate and reinforce the stereotyped gender role that men want sex all the time. Still others have different motivations. This is by no means limited to feminists, nor is being a feminist necessarily indicative of this stance.
/r/MensRights09/05/12 05:05 PM

That would just be eye for an eye; saying every woman is a potential false rape accuser for one is offensive, and secondly would be just as effective at discouraging fliers like these as these fliers are at discouraging rapists.
/r/MensRights09/05/12 04:59 PM

Because the underlying accusation is that men need to be "reminded" to not rape i.e. every man is a potential rapist (or, as popularized in a [blog/editorial?] Schrodinger's rapist). It's also ineffective because if you know you are raping someone, and do it anyway, you don't care. If you don't know what you are doing is rape, then you don't know you are raping. Both kinds of messed up individuals exist, and their actions aren't changed by saying, "remember not to rape." The actual message could…

Oh he did...? Well I'll be fucked, he kinda did, and in a way that raises an eyebrow; I somehow missed that thread. At some point, can't you give the guy the benefit of the doubt? sigh yes, it's called innocent until proven guilty. While it's certainly facepalm-worthy, this appears to be more ignorance than maliciousness in thought (I hope). Spousal rape happens, and it isn't always as cut and dry as this. That's usually in /r/askreddit. It isn't right when it happens there to rape victims, and it certainly doesn't make it right for you to do the same to false accusation victims. As a matter of fact, I don't think this post here is saying at all, "rape doesn't happen," so why the hostility? Sadly a lot of guys are so desperate for sex their that they're willing to go far beyond their own benefit in a relationship. First, sorry for being pedantic. Second, it depends on the person, so, "so desperate for sex," is a gross oversimplification. I don't see many dildos being advertised with a 3cm diameter or 4in length. The length, at least, is so you have something to grip: it needs to at least have enough extra length (4-6in.) for a fist to hold. Girth is highly variable, with "novelty" dildos often reaching outlandish sizes, but they can start pretty 2cm (starter sizes etc). It's sadly ironic how we seem unable to perform a happy medium. It's either laissez-faire, "let the children express themselves!" or overbearing authority. We do…

/r/MensRights25/10/11 03:24 AM

That's all kinds of fucked up. It's one thing to not mandate child support if the kid hasn't been in a parent's life at all, but this would have a horrible potential for abuse of the system. People already use the children against their partners in nasty divorces, and this kind of rationale would make it even easier to do something horrible. "Oh you can't afford it? Well either give the kid to me or give it to the state. If you can't I guess the kid will starve and we'll call CP on you..."

Several factors come to mind for me. First, if you are in a higher socioeconomic class, you probably can afford your own lawyer, or perhaps know someone who can do a case pro bono. Our system is nominally "presumption of innocence," but check this blog by a public defender for a look at what it looks like in practice. You have an overloaded system stacked against you already, so in reality, getting your own (not overworked and underappreciated) lawyer gets you TO "innocent until proven guilty." …

I would suggest simplifying number two to "incapacitated." For instance, being drunk is a wide range of states, but you are only considered incapacitated once you are unable to meet the "awake and aware" check (i.e. able to say your name, the approximate date, and location when asked).

I'm confused by what you mean. Isn't 'what about the menz' used derisively by feminists when someone brings up the male side of an issue (when the original topic was a women's issue)? Perhaps I'm confused, but haven't you described the reverse happening here, with OO thrown in?
/r/MensRights03/10/11 01:56 AM

Well, one affects women directly, and one doesn't. I think it's good they use that argument, insomuch as it discourages women who would do it because of something that directly affects them. Not trivializing the men's issue here, but frame it for your audience, ya know?

I dunno. I would like to actually see the conversation take place, but from the way it is described in the article it seems like the way they are going about it is kind of weird IMO. A tv/radio news announcement might be more effective, and less odd...

It's ridiculous how rape is held to a completely different standard. Eh, normally their complaints would be justified, and wearing skimpy clothes wouldn't make a difference. This case is more the exception than the rule because, "no really, wearing skimpy clothes will make you part of this rapist's target demographic," and people see what is normally raged against and it triggers a rage algorithm because they can't see that it isn't the same.

The only creepy thing about your post, badguy, is that you seem to have been badgering her into trying to lose weight in a really obnoxious passive-aggressive way It was passive-aggressive, and she probably realized it, but I wouldn't describe it as creepy. I would say, "example of you actually doing something bad-ish," since--and I note that it is only bad-ish, because to his credit he put in effort to fixing what he saw to be a problem before giving up--he should have directly communicated tha…

Retaliation will, at least in the US, land you a charge, too, unless you can prove you thought your life was in danger (i.e. necessitated force beyond self-protection). I'm not surprised that he got arrested, but it is appalling that she isn't facing any charges.

No, I agree; I'm pretty sure stuff going to SRS is a product of MR's pr problems, rather than the cause. I also appreciate your vote of confidence ;). I think my fundamental disagreement with people in communityplans is that I think that the goals of the feminist movement are not just compatible with solving men's problems I personally don't think it is incompatible, I just think it needs the impetus to take these on. Without going into too much detail, I believe that for every issue in men that…

I'm gonna add my two cents here as another mod of masculism, if it counts for anything. I'll let godlessaltruist speak for himself on those accounts, but I think overall, the problem is that while the intent isn't to say "all MRA's are crazy" the end result is that because people only see the crazy shit and associate MR with it, even if those comments are later downvoted into oblivion (and let's be honest, people are primed for that since /r/MR doesn't have the best reputation on Reddit). From m…

IF you actually study feminism, you will find that it's absolutely incompatible with the idea of men's rights. Unless you abandon all of the ideas behind it, but then, you're not a feminist anymore. You are something new. Egalitarian? Who knows... I have studied some of it and I don't believe so. I consider myself egalitarian, actually. But feminism is the movement by which most, if not all, of these injustices that men face now, were directly created I would say feminism exacerbated a lot of pr…

Actually, my first point is that this is a subreddit not by men for men, but by everyone for men's rights. disincluding women or men from something implies rejection in some form, creating a 'space' for a gender is , in a sense, being 'against' the other gender to some degree . This is an important distinction between having a space where we (men and women) discuss the legal rights we think everyone (including men) should have, rather than a space that is disincluding someone from the discussion…

And the reason your new subreddit worries me at this point, is that if I were them, this is exactly what I would do to attack us if I were them. I would start a new sub , copy our threads for a while, make similar comments to gain the support of the 25 thousand plus men and women who subscribe to /r/mensrights, and when the sub was doing well, I would massively intensify the trolling efforts here, increasing the drama, and driving people towards /r/masculism, and then destroy the sub through fem…

We're not against women. We're for equal legal rights for men and women. We're against FEMINISM. First two points: never said or thought otherwise. As for the last point I am a bit confused as to your intention. What do you think of feminism (e.g. are some/no brands of feminism are okay and are some/no feminists okay)? Until I know that, I am not sure how to go about answering you. Why are all the accounts associated with this new subreddit 3-4 months old, can anyone tell me that? I can't speak …

I don't think it will be much of an issue, since we are another men's space that is by men and for men. At the very least, it doesn't have a place in /r/masculism as we're all about men's issues so I don't expect any anti-male rhetoric coming up from our contributors, except in articles calling it out, and I trust that viewers like you will downvote it in the case that they do see it. edit: clarity

In the case of, Who cares if they cry "downvote brigade" when they are clearly in the wrong? Quoting myself from above the appearance of impropriety can be just as damaging as the actual presence of impropriety: it's no one's obligation to be nice, polite and look good, but if the goal is to inform, persuade, and win people over (which I think is the goal of activism), then it can be very beneficial to not look bad. Just saying, "it makes us look bad," might be a weak reason, but I think, "under…

I totally agree something should be said, I just think x-posting it has a good chance of causing drama and can lead to accusations of (if not actual) downvote brigades. If someone can't piece together an effective explanation they might make a self-post asking for help in figuring out if a statement is sexist and how to word it, or heck, even PM'ing someone they think might be able to do it better. I understand that arguing/writing isn't everyone's strong suite, but I also believe, given the ava…

Getting involved in the conversation is exactly what activism is all about. I think there is a difference between arguing in the thread and x-posting it to complain. Obviously someone should speak up, but x-posting someone behaving badly in comments here is indistinguishable from circlejerking because everyone here already knows why it's wrong. Discussion within the thread can be healthy and constructive, but x-posting it... I can't really see a time where it doesn't just foment bad blood.

Quoting myself, There is a difference between pressing charges and saying, "I was assaulted and I need to talk about it." Obviously we should always have burden of proof for legal cases, but people seem to conflate a self-post or someone wanting therapy with filing a rape charge. The best thing that can happen when you question a rape/assault post where NO LEGAL CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED is exposing a karma whore, while the worst thing that can happen is hurting a victim. Unless someone can get in…

Not talking about that. I personally think the complaints about the wage gap are based on faulty assumptions and overall it's just a big flashy statistic with context omitted. I'm taking issue with first_time_poster's blanket statements If person A is more educated and tactful with explaining facts, person B with no education will always argue their point to death. Idiocracy FTL. and Person A is correct and Person B isn't. There's no such thing as "seeing the other person's side" in a fact/ficti…

Actually, it can go either way. You can be stupid and stubborn as a mule, or you can be intelligent and just argue around in a circle and refuse to see the other person's side. Smart/educated just means you tend to have more information at your command, it doesn't mean that you can put it to practical use, critically think, or have the market cornered on ethics. Furthermore, it's a gross oversimplification of the problem. Just because someone disagrees with you or doesn't get where you are comin…

There is no rational argument that makes non-reproducing, consensual incest intrinsically immoral in comparison to homosexuality. I don't know about immoral, but I would say unethical almost always. I think you will agree that sex in a relationship almost always changes the dynamics of it. Siblings this isn't as much of an issue, since it is between two peers (assuming both are of age), although it is still ethically wrong (people get jealous over sexual partners, so it has so much potential to …

I think most people here are saying it shouldn't be illegal (if one of the other commentators is to be believed, women conceiving after 35 have a higher chance for genetic disorders) but it doesn't change their opinion of it being ethically wrong. People do fucked up shit all the time, and as long as it is between two consenting adults that don't cause permanent harm to one another, should we really ban it? like a father fucking a daughter, or a mother fucking a son In the US we let people as yo…
