The general idea of that article is that when advice feels really good to hear, you should be suspicious that it's just reinforcing your preconceived notions. You may in fact need to hear the exact opposite advice. Your example of the basement dwellers would probably feel a sense of satisfaction upon hearing that all they need is a sense of self worth.
