Not sure of your age but in my experience I've also found the older I get the more I settle into a realistic perspective of myself. My self esteem is based on actual qualities and achievements that are rooted in reality and I've also accepted my weaknesses. I definitely feel more peaceful within myself. This doesn't need to descend into a spiral of shame but will humble you into realising that you have flaws just like everyone else. Also, apologise to the girl.
