Whatever the cost is, that cost is diffused across the population to the point that a cause and effect style analysis is nearly impossible, even if it could be politically palatable.

You make some great points, I agree with them, and I know it's a passionate subject for all of us here, AND I'm inserting myself, BUT: I don't agree that the name calling is constructive. We're in this together.

"It still plays on the idea that women are more important than men" I certainly didn't mean that, although I can understand why many would interpret my statement that way. My point was that working on men's issues is not mutually exclusive to working on women's issues. There's a synergy we could lean into, rather than the zero-sum mentality, and I bet that notion would be more palatable to the folks we are trying to convince.

One notion I'm not really seeing put forward: a lot of men's issues end up becoming womens problems - it makes perfect sense that helping (AVERAGE) men will lead to better, healthier men who are more receptive to working on women's issues (AND yes, helping men directly to help women indirectly does not mean we have to stop directly helping women). Building each other up to new heights instead of tearing each other down to our mutual worst seems far more constructive and effective IMO. Trickle-do…

Alright, (but I will mention as a caveat that swinger spaces are still difficult to break into as a single guy). There ARE swinger and sex-positive groups tucked away in the nooks and crannies of the fetlife community. Depending on where you live, there may be swinger clubs in the area. I live in the golden horseshoe of Ontario, and one of the local clubs in the Greater Toronto Area, Club M4 has a very popular online chatroom to meet folks. There are also swinger-specific dating sites; me and my…

I think, for a lot of reasons already mentioned, most women don't really consider (or perhaps actively minimize) the emotional toll it can take on men to always be the ones risking rejection. It kind of follows that if they don't have to risk that rejection, many won't, and thus they aren't capable of empathizing on this specific issue. Basically we're talking about discreet/covert hypocrisy. "Improve yourself, because I'm a queen and I deserve better" is probably the most negative/entitled resu…

Ok, I'm not a psychologist, nor do I have the time to go hunting for studies, but here goes: alienation and frustration don't typically lead to LESS violence, especially when they don't feel warranted by the subject.

Unfulfilling careers/jobs that are mostly focused on making money for the corporate elite, punishing financial costs involved with changing careers, depressing levels of financial pressures (especially in regards to housing, costs of daily living, and retirement), education systems that focus on creating employee-drones rather than healthy and happy citizens, political extremism, political cynicism resulting from an overall failure of governance, sexual paranoia/pessimism/alienation, rigid gende…

Aside from the economic factors and the femenistic socialization factors affecting specifically male-female relationships, I'd say there's a very general, and not necessarily gendered culture of fear right now around socialization. I can't point out any specific evidence, it just feels like everyone right now is paranoid of making mistakes, so instead we're all pulling back from friendships/friendliness. Maybe it's our media? Maybe it's because we're all becoming more intolerant of folks who don…

I would add that our 1950's style education and daycare systems need updating and well, as they seem incredibly inflexible for a large proportion of parents. Not everyone has a career for which it's a simple matter to drop your child off at school for 8am and pick them up at 3pm (especially in today's workforce), and I feel like that plays a huge factor in forcing parents to decide that one of them will regularly be more available to confirm to these hours while the other parent works longer hou…

"I'm supposed to be the emotional one"; my god, that level of entitlement, hypocrysy, and lack of empathy should scream volumes to anyone. I really wish we could start acknowledging the extent to which women are given a social-pass to be as narcissistic as they want while we're trashed just for standing up for ourselves.

The only times I've heard the phrase "real men" were, ironically, from male feminists talking about appropriate male behaviour towards/around women. (Although, I will admit I simply don't talk much with trad-cons.)

While yes, that appears to make sense on the surface, I must ask, to what extent does the paranoia about male sexuality that women exhibit and act on actually create more violent behaviour in men? In other words, I'm suggesting that to at least some extent, villainization can be a self-sustaining prophecy as exemplified by the racial issue. And aside from that, to what extent does the binary thinking "strangers = dangers and people I know are safe" lead women to experiencing sexual violence by p…

Controlling for socioeconomic factors is all good, but then you still have the problem of sociopsychological factors that are incredibly hard to pin down. Like...if it isn't purely testosterone that makes us more dangerous, then the socialization must be an issue - at which point your standard feminist will chime in with "toxic masculinity" stuff, implying that men are just socializing men to be violent, which I feel is entirely too reductive and ignores the various roles women play in socializa…

Yep, ever heard anyone talk about "real women" in relation to any specific female's actions in life? Other than ONE line of dialogue in the movie "Waiting", I've never heard either men or women call any specific adult female anything less than simply a "woman" based off her actions/choices/opinions/personality/lifestyle or even virginity. But I bet we've all heard males referred to as man-babies, boys (particulalry because they aren't excelling in adult life), losers, basement-dwellers, or simil…

This probably does fall under the OP's general category of 'sexual attention gap", but to add more detail: I think women fear rejection just as much as men, but they not only insist that only men should have to deal with the fear of actually being rejected (because they refuse to, because most of them can conveniently go through life completely avoiding making rejection "official" by never making any first moves), but also: men just typically don't equate advances by women they aren't attracted …

This kind of applies to any passion-project; if the sentiment of society is so strongly opposed to your cause, you run a significant risk of being ostracized out of your career, as well as relationships with friends and family. For example, just imagine living in the 40's or 50's (in the deep south of the US, as a white person) and taking a personal stand against racism; for a lot of folks it was social suicide. Plus, you can add actual physical threats of violence at the extremes (and right now…

The part that kills me is the partisanism and near-sightedeness involved here. Like...there's absolutely no real acknowledgement of the idea that helping men could in any way help women; instead we get the zero-sum mentality and statements like "good behaviour is to be demanded/expected, NOT rewarded" along with other stuff that generally equates to the old saying "the beatings will continue until moral improves".

I have wondered before to what extent patriarchy arose as a response to the sexual dimorphism of humans (as in a system to regulate/mitigate tendancies toward hypergamy, AND/OR inheritance issues in a world without birth control or paternity tests) as opposed to pure sexism (like unfounded notions that women simply aren't intelligent or fit to act as leaders in the community). I mean, a major theme in most religions (which tend to be patriarchal) revolves around the harmony of the community and …

Agreed. My first therapist turned out to be basically what the OP fears his might be, in terms of ideology, plus he just wasn't super-engaging for me. Even if sex-robots improve in thier overall accuracy of the human body, I really doubt the vast majority of even the most shallow of people would be satisfied; they would merely exercise out thier purely physical sexual frustration to finally discover what most of us already recognize: that the sexuality we crave has a lot more to do with needing trust, emotional intimacy, and partnership. I mean, how many of us have had that desperate-sex we wanted, with someone we weren't all that attracted to…

That second paragraph, yeah. It really does feel like we're stuck in a downward spiral right now. I think the result we're seeing now will only get worse for at least a few decades, because socially, we just can't agree that the actual problem might not be the problem that keeps being promulgated by pop-culture ("toxic masculinity" or otherwise the vague, outdated notions of patriarchy-theory).

On this note I feel like there must be a strong instinct and/or confirmation bias at play - something like the "last donut on the shelf" problem - "if he couldn't become perfect on his own and other ladies rejected him, so should I, that's the 'safe' thing to do".
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates25/04/23 01:16 AM

To quote a comment further down "internalized bigotry is a thing". And that absolutely makes sense; a clear example would be the tendancy in many former colonial countries where there is an obvious cultural preference for/bias towards lighter skinned people in a lot of areas of life (employment hiring, dating, etc.) even amongst one's own ("native") ethnicity or peer-group.

From my own experiences, the hard-core economic leftists of feminism tend to be lesbians who are sex-negative about male-sexuality, while the heterosexual feminists tend to shun economic philosophy in general and defer to the status quo of neo-liberalism/laze-fair capitalism; OR, if they are heterosexual feminists who care at all about socialism, they either typically aren't focused on the politics of sex, heterosexual sex-positivity, and/or seek out partners with low-sex drives. Don't forget the extent to which they objectify themselves. Not saying that's intentional in the vast majority of cases, but there have to be SOME narcissistic effects that occur when your parents, friends and society in general condition you to believe that A) your sexuality provides you benefits in life and B) your sexual safety trumps everything else in your life (up to, and possibly including, that life itself) AND everything else in any given person's life.

I got into this sort of arguement with friends of a friend and one of the lines they pulled out was women "have" to fear random rapes at night. I said something along the lines of "but we know the vast majority of rapes occur between people that already know each other, or at best, met at a social function. PLUS statistics are extremely in favour of random violence occurring in man v man scenarios." Deaf ears. Emotion trumps reason and fear trumps empathy. So yeah, I no longer talk to that frien…

I simply reject the idea that it is healthy, progressive, and (especially) constructive to invalidate any voices in discussions of social issues. The only acceptable exceptions to this would include situations like literal nazi's commenting on racial issues. And sure, it's definitely important to elevate the voices of real victims of social issues (because the idea that they've become victims due to a diminishment or lack of voice IS valid), but only partisan extremists equate that notion to inv…

I don't think this phenomenon is entirely to blame, but there's definitely a huge contradiction between a lot of women "wanting to have it all", including a high-effort/high-paying career while simultaneously wanting thier partner to make more money than them so that they can take time off of said career to raise the children their male partner may or may not have wanted. The resulting dissonance isn't typically resolved with any introspection or self-responsibility, and the situation gets neatl…

The answer seems pretty obvious here, and most of the comments agree - (it's relatively subjective, but) essentially, we're talking about peri-pubescence. Hell, young boys aren't allowed into the women's locker-room with thier mother (like at the local pool) even LONG before puberty. I think at this point it's more important to ask: why do we ignore the mirroring of this phenomenon in female pubesence? Empathy is a two-way street. If you (man or women) refuse to engage constructively about how the opposite gender feels, why would you expect the same people to submit to your demands that they proactively engage in efforts to understand and accommodate your own gendered struggles/anxieties/fears? That's just not a fair situation, and when you add the ideological BS on top, it often becomes a toxic situation. Yes. We live in a society where having men and women be able to interact with each other is normal, healthy and neccesary. I believe segregating the genders only helps to promote a lack of empathy between the genders. The extent to which females dominate teaching positions or favour female students in grading are separate, higher-level failures in the way we structure and implement education. In other words, we should not accommodate failures of socialization by reducing socialization; we need t…

As a lifelong nudist/naturist, I take the view that enforcing anyone to wear clothing is just plain wrong. I'm perfectly willing to accept that women face serious health risks from pregnancy. I disagree with the sentiment that "sex is the hardware and gender is the software"; simply because I believe the hardware element has significant influence over the software element via things like hormones. We are not robots, we evolved from (and still are in many ways) animals, and we can tell (from stuff like simple pathology) that the hardware does indeed influence the software, even if society is able to update the software further.

If I had to guess and just make up numbers, I'd say guys that are 5'7 or 5'8 experience a pretty neutral effect on thier success at attracting women in general; every additional inch of height adds something like a 10-20% increase in those chances, while every inch of height below that middling range reduces your success by around 20% (incrementally). Women simply carry more risk from sex, so they’re more selective. It’s the principle of least interest. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just is what it is." I would counter that one of the real problems we're facing is that this paragraph ISN'T accepted as fact by our current social environment. In fact, statements like this…

I had a similar interaction with my roommate recently. We were talking about how much its wearing on us to live in a big city, how people are so jaded and rude, emotionally disconnected, etc. Suddenly she brings up the idea that certain individuals should be holding doors for her because she's a woman...and I'm thinking to myself "thanks for steering the conversation we were having about the mutual malaise with the big city directly into the realm of gendered expectations....awesome, so I guess …

I've encountered this as well. Lots of posts from women looking for "women" or (at best) "people without a penis" who then turn around and lambast any man also looking for the same on the grounds that those men are being "cis-sexist". As if most hetero-folks don't choose their partners based on sexual needs but 'gender' instead AND as if these individuals weren't JUST advertising with specific sexual organs in mind.

The very concept of 'political' lesbianism feels like a dog-whistle for misandry. Sounds an awful lot like "I choose to date women, not because I'm really sexually/romantically attracted to them deep down, but because men are awful".

I could imagine that helping a little, but not much, especially if societal attitudes towards male sexuality aren't changed beforehand or as a result of legalization; the vast majority of incels don't want fake (purchased) intimacy any more than they want forced intimacy (rape) - they want mutual intimacy, they want to feel attractive (not just physically) and loved/needed by folks.

I support supporting people who have survived abuse. That being said, I'm not convinced that the 'support' many of them receive is necessarily as constructive or healing as it might always appear - for example, expressions of sympathy that often imply the victim should be a broken individual after what they endured might have the unintended effect of furthering the sensation of victimization or helplessness. I think that element often goes overlooked.

On that third paragraph, I couldn't agree more and it REALLY bothers me; because yeah, we'll all be sitting around the breakfast table one day and suddenly, decades after the fact, your smarmy, shallow, fluff-piece morning news-crew will announce to the masses that all this time the 'wage-gap' idea was oversimplified garbage. The bias against men is A) So strong that even most of us don't notice when we act out that bias and B) It tends to erase any nuance in discussions around female safety. What I mean with that last part is: when we hear about women being afraid of any particular man, the gut social reaction is to assume her fears are 100% valid about that particular man without ever critically examining those fears. If you ever want to let the fox out amongst the hens so-to speak, go ahead and suggest that the ex…

I think the word your both dancing around might be more appropriately defined as "intimacy", which, vague as it is, covers the ground in between friendship/loneliness and full-blown sexuality. Don't forget the absurdly reductionist nature of the evidence presented (more males in politics, wealth, leadership positions, etc); simply implying "the patriarchy" ignores or overrides so many opportunities to ask "why?" - like perhaps the situation is much more nuanced. We do appear, from almost any measure, to be the more genetically diverse sex, the "experimental" model, with a higher degree of variance from the mean average compared to women. So yeah, the statistics result in a wider, flatter bell-curve for men when basically any trait (physical, psychological, behavioural, etc) is examined. I think this imparts a (subconcious, psycho-socio) effect that promotes the erroneous supposition that women are the "default" human being when compared to men.

I really don't believe these protests are all about how women are treated in Iran, even if that treatment has culminated as a catalyst to rioting. There is a multitude of systemic problems in Iran, not the least of which being the whole theocratic authoritarianism issue. It feels to me like a lot of this is a culmination of socio-gender dynamics (including social amplification of pyscho-socio-sexual instincts) resulting in the general sense that women are the default human resulting from a fetus not affected by the Y chromosome (resulting in biological male), and therefore men are somehow, the "other". This carries forth for understandings of behaviour. So 'women are people acting reasonably, while men are dogs, driven by "lesser" instincts'

I think the best solution here is from within our own gender; we need to educate each other more about the biases we face, and where to draw lines for our own safety and health. I do think we should be more vocal in the social sense, raising awareness, advocating and such so that we can highlight the inequalities for women; but I think on this particular topic, the change is best left to ourselves in an uplifting sort of way, even if it's not fair.

Gender stuff aside, I'm not really convinced this is the best strategy. It's really putting Russians in an impossible situation; "risk death defying your government or risk death by going to war, but by no means will we allow you to flee, even if it would mean you won't be fighting against us". The worst aspect of this, or at least the most common IMO, is the (typically) hostile refusal to oppose gender norms in dating. It's super obvious that a lot of gender conflict revolves around or is exacerbated by the tendency for men to HAVE to initiate flirting and risk constant/repeated rejection. I agree with you, and was not suggesting any of this is really a concious process for individuals (or society at large). In fact, I think the reason we're having such difficulty solving these problems is that folks mostly are not concious of what's really going on here. 'Society encouraging women to act this way' and 'people take the path of least resistance' are not mutually exclusive statements; I think they're almost equivalent for this particular topic.

I guess at that point we have to rely on social progression. Empathy would eliminate/reduce those double standards and biases the same way it has for women in general, oppressed races, the LGBT crowd, etc. (To whatever level you would agree we as a species have been successful in those regards; and I believe these have been, for the most part, worthy causes). I mean, it's not like we can physically alter human instincts.

I think the solution probably involves, first and foremost, an honest conversation about all this, including recognition than both nature and nurture play very real roles (the whole "versus" thing is bullshit, they work in concert). I don't mind at all going into the nature v nurture debate, even though I'm not an expert; evolution has steered us here. I contend that rape is feared by men for almost purely social reasons involving hierarchy/dominance and gender-roles; women have that too, but also (historically) sex was quite dangerous for women - the odds of dying in pregnancy/birth are super high, STDs are easier for them to contract, and STDs are more likely to leave them sterile. So whereas male reproductive strategy is…

Scrubs: I loved the comedy, but it came at the price of at least a quarter of the main character's plot lines involving him deal with romantic/sexual rejection or manipulatuon (quite gracefully I would add), but it's always framed either in a very sex-negative context, or as if this young, attractive, well-intentioned doctor deserved rejection just for being attracted to any particular woman.

Here's a wild take (/s): the incredible fear women have of male sexuality gets internalized by most (esp hetero) men, resulting (at least in part) in most men adopting and acting on that same fear. Actually, to just follow up/reiterate, if you really want as solid a definition as possible (from me) as to what makes men and women different: hormones + time, and socialization + time. But the time itself is also a critical factor; not just the duration, but especially the stage in one's life. The really gender-formative years (let's say 10-21) are incredibly influential in combination with said hormones AND socialization. I've always found the idea of "defining" gender to be futile. Not only is it absurdly subjective, it's also masking the real question: what makes men different from women? Brain injury in general is really overlooked as a prime cause of homelessness. I've seen estimates of up to 50% of homeless folks having a physically traumatic event in thier past which resulted in a brain injury; and it makes perfect sense. Be upstanding and trustworthy, but don't pursue one-sided relationships or allow yourself to be taken advantage of.…

I've noticed this a lot as well. I take public transit for work most days, and it is not uncommon at all to overhear women discussing thier partners, comparing, competing over who has the better (or worse) partner, occassionally mocking them, strategizing over how to get him to do stuff, etc... I think it's that last part that bothers me the most. I don't, and I don't think most men do: have a team of advisors planning out how to manipulate/coerce thier partners into changing thier behaviour or …

I took the fungible comment more to mean that outside of one's personal relationships, we tend to treat folks as fairly interchangeable. This itself is not mutually exclusive with treating these interchangeable people with respect and empathy, but perhaps not the intense personal interest implied to be missing when you're accused of objectification.

That's not just going to have a detrimental effect on individuals; the consequences for your whole society are rather dire if the justice system can wrongfully convict with impunity. Things could spiral out of control quickly if the authorities decide to abuse that power for say...political gain. Also, not a fan of the death penalty; but I am on board in certain scenarios: mainly those in which there is absolutely no doubt who the perpetrator was (ie: caught in the act by recording equipment), a…

IMO, the fetish scene is not usually much better. In my experience, there's often a toxic mix of feminist logic applied quite bizzarely/confusingly over a background of fetishizing traditionally HYPER-masculine stuff; lots of folks that have sexualized pain, bondage, submission and power imbalaces (all amounting to rape fantasies) while shunning non-violent intimacy and open sexuality for it's own sake.

I wouldn't say that means we have no agency in picking our partners, just that we have a whole lot less options (including the often unwanted option of lonliness), which can feel nearly equivalent to a loss of agency.

I occasionally watch a youtuber named ComicBookGirl19 (aka Danica) who talked about this somewhat recently. She pointed out how many of the male superheroes lately are shown shirtless or otherwise have their sexual value somehow on display while the female characters are all being portrayed as prudish, angry-mommy types, the majority of whom have full length/full coverage costumes. I find it particularly ironic that Natalie Portman has made a strong point in her career lately to never take on an…

I don't know about bisexuals not getting flak twenty years ago. I distinctly remember a lot of boomers that had a tacit acceptance of lesbians and gay males while maintaining that bisexuals must still be over-sexed/perverts and potentially even rapists/pedophiles. Maybe it was different within the gay community (I wouldn't know).

But why do you want to believe we have no instincts in this regard? Because it would be easier to modify behaviour if it's not hard-coded into us (on some level)? You see, I'm frustrated by folks in general who would rather believe something because it seems more convenient, than actually study the problem those beliefs are intended to solve/address.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates21/05/22 08:30 PM

That's perfectly fair and I agree, we should be having honest discussions about our instincts and how they conflict with individual health and, as you mentioned, "social harmony". We just need to start from the perspective that our instincts are thousands of years outdated, and that we can't do anything to directly modify them. The problem we have right now, socialogically, entails a hostility to the idea that we even have evolution-derived instincts, especially that women have any (rather than …

The thing is, evolution is only impacted by social behaviour on a super long time-line, and it really doesn't give a shit about individuals, thier mental health or socialization in the short term. It also doesn't have to produce anything we can judge as good or bad, it just does its thing so long as the species continues. Sometimes evolution even steers species into dead-ends for no particular reason.

About apathy towards men being ingrained in our culture; I question the degree to which this is social, because I'm suspecting more and more that it might also be ingrained in our DNA as a result of psychological evolution (even if this is rationalized as a purely social phenomenon).

I think it's an inherently flawed concept. Of course humans treat each other with group-bias, so intersectionality does have some logic to it (because we're still instinctually very tribal); but I would much rather we try to educate people to eliminate those biases as much as possible rather than leaning into them. I love this comment. Teaching self-awareness when it comes to animalistic tendancies is exactly what we need right now, rather than the extremes of the far left and far right that seem to dominate thinking on the topic (the far left insisting that ALL behaviour is socially derived and the far right insisting instincts are immutable but manageable with extreme measures).

I think a lot of this boils down to humans being too stupid (on average, and on a long enough timeline) to really understand or remember nuance. You see this all over the place, but especially with political topics. Left = such and such, Right = such and such, and (especially lately) anyone speaking up about nuance or a middle-ground is understood by the majority of those polar positions to be either: a) watering down the message or b) secretly rooting for the other side. I think it's an apt term, especially in replacing "toxic masculinity", because it could apply to either gender and does not immediately conjure up images of villainous men trying to just oppress each other and women. That being said, I would much rather our community focus on promoting scientific research into the biological, gendered impacts on behaviour (esp sexual) than the subjective social terminology we choose to describe the after-effects of the former.

In fact, I'd add that aside from generalizing or implying there may be aspects of femininity that are harmful to men, I get strong vibes from almost any woman I talk to that femininity should not to be even investigated (especially by cis and straight men), simply because of the cognitive dissonance that MIGHT ensue.

I think the whole sentiment that if they ask first they'll get labeled as "sluts" is really a self-fulfilling prophecy; if it were normalized (ie. I suspect you're even more correct than you think, or at least more correct than you've indicated; I'm pretty much convinced MOST of the gender disparities we have are due to socialization both overlaying and obscuring very real behavioural differences inherent in our hormones. The parenting penalty does affect women more, but even just leaving that point without further explanation seems disingenuous; perhaps we (society) should follow that up with questions like "is that voluntary?"/"do women prefer to be the primary childcare provider?", "is this phenomenon more attributable to genderless financial pressures or pure mysogeny?", etc.

I think the term is valid and should be appreciated at face value, just like "feminsm=equality", but as you alluded, it's the implementation that is often lacking, particularly because people are so bad at understanding nuance in general that they tend to simplify said implementation. It's a clear false equivalency. If anyone tells you there's no nuance to politics, psychology, sociology, etc., then they're already extremists, and are announcing how little their opinion should be allowed to sway you.

I see a lot of you missing the idea that sexualization doesn't necessarily mean positive sexualization like we're used to hearing about with women. Men are sexualized constantly, but the vast majority of it is negative sexualization; instead of "oh he's so hot, I should smile at him and maybe strike up a conversation" it's almost always "ewww, I hope that guy doesn't come near me".
