The woman commenting is a very disturbing person is what I'm making of this... Some people have rape fantasies to handle traumas or their own fears. It can be a power play thing too and to some it's very strange but it's been found to be healthy in many situations, though of course in some it's not

Soft science and hard sciences are both needed and necessary for society though. Even biology was once considered a soft science. Sociology is a valid field and while yes we need farmers and doctors, etc, sociological fields are also valuable. And we do need to sit around and talk about gender. It is a social construct and even biological identity that impacts the way we experience the world and the ways we are treated

Being mean to a whole gender or assuming they will all act the same way isn't a fair reaction to misogyny. It doesn't help at all and encourages bioessentialist mindsets and, funnily enough, gender roles.

I wouldn't shit on gender studies or anything like that. Most people in those fields are quite agreeable and normal about things. It definitely doesn't encourage radfem behaviors. There are fools in every field ever and it doesn't discredit the field as a whole

I think it's showing us different top comments cause for the second one for me it's a NTA comment as the top one !

I will say most people in the comments are on the posters side with these ones. So I'm not sure why the ruling of the first one is so harsh. That's weird. But generally AITA just isn't a very nice place. And honestly redditors in popular communities tend to be not very nice either LOL.

I understand what they have to say better now and I don't understand why those feminist orgs are so against them. It seems like they didn't hear them out and, like you said, just heard their dislike of the term feminism and ran with it. I feel the 1522 number should be more inclusive if it isn't already as they hint

Many people are saying that the billboard was a hotline number that you could call. That isn't true, but it makes sense that it's actually them calling for there to be a 1523 number. I think a lot of feminist orgs didn't like it because they felt like the campaign was putting men's rights at opposition with women's rights by saying feminism shouldn't be a term that the Italian government can use as if it's somehow anti-man (which I also disagree that the government shouldn't be allowed to use th…

Mostly in cases where someone was accused but not convicted or they won the case

It isn't telling men to be silent about abuse if it's smearing a campaign for pretending to be for male domestic violence victims when the number doesn't even work. It's 1 digit off of the main domestic violence hotline, 1522, and I've been reading that there's no way to actually call it. And their website calls feminism "unconstitutional" which is why a lot of feminist organizations were against it. So if this is true, then it wasn't because it was helping men

I've had some Italian folks inform me that this was because the billboard didn't even have a real phone number on it that worked and was made by a misogynistic group. These claims could be false, but I wouldn't know as I don't speak Italian and don't think I can call that number from my country 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, this is all true, but i want to point out that there are also instances where the after effects of coming forward about being raped also include external repercussions too. like being ostracized by family members/friends, labelled a liar even if you aren't, being victim blamed, re-traumatized by the legal system, publicly smeared because you were labelled a liar, etc. I have also seen cases where someone was accused of sexual assault- whether falsely or not- and they moved on with their liv…

Luckily most people in that thread were adamant about it not being in opposition to helping women. Also, the reason why that campaign was smeared was because it was just an anti-feminist billboard. The domestic violence help number on it couldn't even be called. It wasn't because they were against men getting help, the people who made the billboard just sucked and didn't actually want to help men.

I am going to deeply disagree with you on this. Both are very terrible, but rape doesn't just "last a few minutes" and I think it's unfair to minimize the trauma that comes with it. The memory, PTSD, the way it destroys peoples sexualities and makes them fear the world and other people. I'd argue a false rape accusation and rape are both pretty equally terrible in some different ways

This person has some sort of valid points, but inflates them and mixes in some bioessentialist takes. Not cool, seems to happen a lot too. People seem to be unable to recognize that the world is nuanced- annoyingly so. There can be cases of gay men still sexualizing women. And there are cases of gay men appropriating AAVE, but this doesn't make gay men no longer allies to lesbians/women in general. And saying that all men will behave a certain way is not the feminist take this person thinks it i…

This is so true, and a lot of people don't focus on it enough but it's something that also needs to be addressed if we want progress and equality

That is a great way to sum up how both genders/gender role categories are exploited and mistreated.

Yeah you are right. Iirc, the statistic is only 20% of sexual assaults on women come from random men. The other 80% are men they know. And I see what you thought I was getting at at first 😬 I definitely don't agree with anti-men statements. I personally use the term feminist, but it really upsets me how much groups like terfs have hijacked the term in a lot of ways. Luckily most feminists I meet are very kind and intelligent and do not hate men. But there are definitely some "feminists" out ther…

I saw particularly gross stuff in femaleantinatalism and femalepessimism. Thank you for this discussion! Often people are unkind during misunderstandings or disagreements online which is so counterproductive. So it was nice to have a kind discussion :)

Wow, that is really horrific and a gross example of gender essentialism. I have never seen subs like this or people saying that until now! That's a great example of people letting their trauma make them hateful. A lot of those women seem to think they are somehow making a difference when they are just further reinforcing gender stereotypes and/or just saying evil things :/

I am agreeing with every single point you are making, and I'm thinking part of where we are misunderstanding is I didn't come into this being too clear or eloquent with what my point/intentions were and I should have made them clearer. I feel like some of the comments you made in your posts were a bit unsympathetic to women who have experienced trauma from men. I am sure this was not your intention at all! And you seem to have made that clear in your past paragraph there. But I read it that way …

I never said men were inherently violent. In fact I clearly stated the opposite. And I don't think a man is wrong if he is weary around women because he's been traumatized by a woman. That doesn't make him bad. That makes him someone with trauma he needs to work through. While it is true that some women are bad too, all I was saying is it isn't crazy for someone to be weary of men due to their past experiences. I also feel like if I was face to face with a woman I'd be more likely to be able to …

I will say I don't think you're a misandrist if you're wary around men you don't know as a woman. Some women have trauma that has been caused by men and I think it's completely reasonable to not trust a random man you don't know- so long as you aren't hating on men as a gender. While you can argue you should do the same with women, it is true that there are certain forms of violence that you're more likely to have a man inflict upon you than another woman unfortunately. This isn't all men, and i…
