Sexlessness has increased among young people generally. Men face more competition for women between roughly the ages of 20 and 30 because there is a pool of men 30 and older willing and able to date women in their age cohort. This results in young men shouldering more of the burden of this social change.

The more asymmetry there is at the start of a relationship, the more inequitable it will be in the long run.

I'm probably an interesting test case. My parents actually provided me with zero sex or relationship education, the only sex ed I received was from school and reading Dan Savage's column. My parents were otherwise pretty intelligent about parenting, instilling good values and putting me in a position to be successful in most other arenas of life. Also, very few of my friends in high school / college dated much during these years, so I had essentially zero guidance. I also developed very negative…

Yeah, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is known to be very successful at helping to alter warped self perceptions.

Ah, yeah if this is how you're looking at it, sure. Over half of all people older than 15 in the US are married, so unless there was some reason that people who are suitable for relationships get in relationships less frequently than the average population, necessarily most people who should be married already are, and I'm sure adding in people in relationships makes it a strong supermajority. Of course, increases with age.

Yeah, evidence of Flynn effect shows the average American IQ increases by about three points every year relative to previous decades. But obviously the average is still 100 because by definition 100 is the average IQ.

I feel like this is just pushing my question back one more step. What does it mean to be suitable for a relationship, beyond simply wanting to be in a relationship?

What does it mean to say someone "should" be in a relationship?

Have you considered this might simply be an availability bias in your personal life? Have you asked your brothers whether they would have been willing to date women closer to them in height? Obviously anecdotal data, but I have two friends over 6'0" and both are dating women between 5'6" and 5'10" (I don't know their exact heights, never had reason to ask before) and neither are, you know, super models. Just normal women who are above average in height, which is appropriate given they're pretty …

As a 6'3" tall man, I have a height floor, I don't really have a height ceiling (though I've never met a woman taller than me, so hard to say how I'd feel in that circumstance). I will not date women who are more than a foot shorter than me because it makes the mechanics of being with one another, e.g. holding hands, kissing, etc, uncomfortable and awkward. This isn't really something I talk to about with other men, but I have to imagine a lot feel the same way.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
