I'll try again. They posted a map of Europe to show that in every single country but one, men are getting murdered more often. And the point they made was that in that single other country, something is going on that we need to bring up. On top of that, let's say we wave a magic wand and fix the problem is Austria, then men will be murdered more often. Sounds an awful lot like it's the default and that it's fine.

Exactly my point. Let's tackle the problem as a whole. When a picture like this is posted, where we see that obviously being a man you have higher chance of being murdered in general, yet the point being made is "look at this one outlier, this is a big deal", it makes it sound like as long as men are being murdered most, it's fine. "19% of journalists killed last year were women"... so 81% were men surely? 100% of those deaths were horrible, so why not focus on that.

Obviously I'm not saying we should do nothing or not care about that issue. Austria has something going on there that should be investigated. But there's one funny thing about genders, it's that there's two of them. So illustrating that issue with a map of the whole of Europe and going "See, what the hell is going on in Austria?" means that the "default" is that men are murdered more. I just don't understand why it's more of a problem, seeing as the numbers are disproportionately on the side of men getting killed. It reeks of a narrative of "it's fine if most people getting killed are men, but it's scandalous that some of them are women." I don't want anyone to get killed. Let's fix that problem.

To me it's a way to twist the stats to make it easier to be offended by women getting murdered. In almost no situation are women getting killed more than men, so they have to look at the gender of the killer to get a stat they like.

Someone shared an article on my feed today that so far this year, 118 women were murdered in Canada, and they captioned it with like "This has to stop, we need to get better". I googled a little bit and as far as I can tell, there are around 600 murders a year in Canada. So the other 500 are men. What the fuck is the point of writing that kind of articles...
