New York PostCorrection: the husband is (almost always) not “allowed a second wife”, and there are cases in the orthodox Jewish community where the wife refuses to accept the get, leaving her husband with little recourse. Both of these situations are relatively rare. In Israel, as a consequence of conflating religion and government, the Rabbinate has judicial power to jail husbands who refuse to give a get, or wives who refuse to accept one.
