When this sort of thing thing happens, your assessment is spot-on. In this particular case, however, the Rabbis were inexcusably sloppy and took money without researching the case; they did so little research that they didn’t even realize the story was made up and there was no husband.

there is a stupid religious law that the Orthodox have stupidly not changed There isn’t any human agency with the authority to change this law. Suggestions of the form, “If you just stopped believing what you believe, you could…” are not terribly helpful to those who, y’know, believe in the Divine origins of these laws.

Correction: the husband is (almost always) not “allowed a second wife”, and there are cases in the orthodox Jewish community where the wife refuses to accept the get, leaving her husband with little recourse. Both of these situations are relatively rare. In Israel, as a consequence of conflating religion and government, the Rabbinate has judicial power to jail husbands who refuse to give a get, or wives who refuse to accept one. In the US, separation of church & state makes it difficult for this…
