In many states, by law, a former spouse cannot inherit assets upon the death of the other former spouse regardless of the terms of any will. So, this may not be necessary. Check with a divorce or estate lawyer in your jurisdiction.

You should file your return as married filing separately. Take the deductions for both children. The IRS will either (1) not catch that both you and your wife claimed the deductions or (2) catch it. If the IRS doesn't catch it, move on. If the IRS does catch it, they will reject both returns and you and your wife will have to work it out. She will not have the final say on this point and it would be another item to resolve in the divorce. Just STFU and do what you have to do.

As a lawyer and someone who has been through the divorce process in the US, I can tell you that most of this is off base and would not even begin to be relevant for 99% of men. The system does not work this way. If you're a W2 employee with a couple of bank and investments accounts, none of this will apply. And, as a practical matter, your wife probably already knows what accounts you have. Maybe this is helpful for ultra high net worth men but that's it.

Your in-laws own the house. Unless you are a tenant with a signed lease, you have no obligation to maintain the house. Depends on your age and stage of life. After college, great time going out with coworkers and friends. Get married and have kids in your life becomes your family.
