I think people like this don't even realize they're lying after awhile. That's very true. I'm an expert level liar myself. It's a skill I've actively honed over the past several decades. The first step of any good lie is to convince yourself it's the truth, yet at the same time you need to prevent yourself in the long run from actually forgetting that it's a lie, which is very difficult.
