It's very hard to identify where the line from "fascist rhetoric" to "full-blown genocidal nazi" is without having already crossed it And it's quite clear now that if Republicans stop before that line it will be due to lack of opportunity, not lack of desire.

I went to a "violence in the workplace" training once that talked about how women are the primary victims, since murder is the second-highest cause of workplace death for women after driving accidents. Women get murdered at work at like ¼ the rate men do. Murder's just waaay lower on the list for men because men die from other causes at work at even higher rates.

There's an "M" on my driver's license. Male is how society identifies me. It's a reasonable heuristic for guessing my physical features, but I care about the cultural aspects only insofar as I resent them. I guess some people are very enthusiastic about gender, but this is as alien a concept to me as anything in the human experience.

Walmart is controlled by people in the pay of the Walmart corporation. Therefore, Walmart employees must have immense privilege, right? The stores were built by Walmart employees, for Walmart employees. The 86 year-old who works checking your receipt at the door to survive is complicit in a system which puts people in the pay of Walmart among the wealthiest and most powerful Americans. She must be so smug. What is she hiding behind that "employees only" door?

The Egg shit is wild to me. Trans-spotting is rightly reviled when conservatives do it, yet somehow it's fine for people to assert that a guy is just a closeted trans woman because he doesn't seem toxic enough to fit their vile stereotypes? Wild shit.

The entire idea that the complex interaction of socially-imposed benefits and drawbacks that both genders experience in various spheres of life can be boiled down to a single variable called "privelege", and that equality is only beneficial for the team with a lower score, is one of the biggest problems with feminist thinking. We should be very careful not to fall into the same trap.

“While the feminist part of me yelled ‘Smash the patriarchy!’ the mother part of me wanted to wrap the patriarchy up in its blankie and read it a story.” This exposes a major motte-and-bailey point; if you call out the misandry of "patriarchy" as a term and a concept, feminists will generally rush to point out that patriarchy≠individual men. But that absolutely is the connotative meaning. However they may treat it as a nebulous system of normative blah blah blah when called out, they don't see A…

This is what bugs me about 99% of the rhetoric on this I've seen the past few days. This wasn't Kamala losing, it was Trump winning. Yeah, she got fewer votes than Biden overall, but almost all of that was in safe states--not *ideal*, but strategically acceptable. in battleground states, i.e. the ones that matter, she *gained* on Biden. Trump just...gained more.

People would probably laugh at you if you brought up how Christians have Christian privilege. Roughly 30% of Americans claim no religion. The same is true of only 0.3% of congresspersons. It's the biggest demographic disparity in governance by a long shot.

Witches Vs. Patriarchy is wild because it's a bad concept even if you're a full-throated feminist. Ursula K. Leguin talked about how insulting to women the embracing of this sort of "intuitive" "natural" "alternate paths of knowledge" sort of woo is. it treats women as noble savages, abdicates the "paths to knowledge" that actually *work* (i.e. empiricism) as un-female, and romanticises ignorance and the prejudice that stemmed from it. "We are the daughters of the witches you couldn't burn"--fuc…

NLTOG is a stroke of genius because it's a very easy shorthand way to attack anyone who advocates for the virtues of traditionally masculine modes of gender expression. Back in the '70s, feminists criticized things like the cultural expectation to wear makeup or keep up with fashion as expensive and superficial burdens disproportionately imposed on women. The backlash against this sort of artificial aesthetic arms race lasted basically until it became apparent that men weren't actually the prima…

Here's how I view it: if I get a bad performance review at work, that sucks. Not because "corporate drone" is my truest, deepest identity, but because that review signifies the opinion of people with a lot of control over my quality of life. Likewise, I don't give a shit about masculinity for its own sake, but I recognize that "masculinity" is society's rubric for me. Poor social performance reviews or situations that cast my capacity in a negative light are likely to directly harm me. This is d…

Left and right are more than perspectives on gender. While I'm often frustrated with the gender paradigm that's typically endorsed by leftists, I view it as a deviation from the left's usually admirable stances on equality, inclusivity, and opportunity. Meanwhile, I think that the right's equally objectionable outlook on gender is much more in keeping with their overall philosophy--one that values hierarchy and adherence to traditional social roles. It's like choosing between a run-down shed wit…

There's certainly a sense in which it's real, in that most people in the upper echelons of power are male. That doesn't make it a useful description of power dynamics in society. The CEO of Walmart is paid by the Walmart corporation. That person is, technically, a Walmart employee. Does that mean that Walmart employees can expect preferential treatment over non-Walmart employees at Walmart? No. Quite the opposite. Being on Walmart's payroll does not mean the CEO will put the needs of others in t…

I also don't know how they keep preaching about intersectionality when they disregard half the population. I could be off-base here, but I don't think intersectionality theory implies any belief in male oppression per se; its basis is the "intersections" between "axes of privilege", and on the gender axis "male" is the inherently privileged end while "female" is the inherently oppressed end. Intersectionality theory does provide for other ways in which people who are men can be oppressed, so som…

That's a skill issue. Sometimes, sure, but plenty of modes by which contraception can fail are random, not plausibly preventable by a reasonably cautious user. Abortion should not be used as contraception. That's what it is, though. Emergency contraception, if possible, but still contraception. You're just parroting pro-life talking points here, acting like the reasons abortion is important don't exist. Like it's not a socially irresponsible position to expect decades of child rearing to be the …

It is a defensible position that in most cases, surrendering a child to the (American) foster care/adaption system is immoral on a number of levels. Moreover, the differences between abortion and safe surrender as ways to avoid parenthood are NOT just the financial medical costs. The emotional investment a person has after carrying a child to term, even if they know intellectually that they lack the means to care for that child, is usually monumental. Acting as if one of the willing participants…

"Walmart was built by Walmart employees, for Walmart employees". I mean yes, the people who constructed every Walmart were, in fact, employed by Walmart to do so. And the people who benefit most from Walmart existing do receive money from the Walmart corporation. That doesn't mean Walmart cashiers are the feudal lords of their checkout lane, or that the customers are being oppressed by the stock fillers' access to whatever's behind the 'employees only' door.

I mean at the moment, the fact that ACTUAL abortion is being widely restricted is pretty fucking valid. If you live in a state where abortion is highly accessible, I think there's no good argument against paper abortions. If, however, you live in one of the increasing number of places where an unexpected pregnancy is effectively illegal NOT to bring to term, it's only fair that that burden fall equally on both parents.

I'm not saying I'm fully on board with this conclusion, but it doesn't deserve the downvotes. If your stereotypical '50s racist dad "won't have any son of mine listening to that awful negro rock music", the fact that his son is white doesn't make the impulse not racist, or somehow racist against white people instead. Disliking the trappings of a given caste can indicate bigotry against that caste even if the person exhibiting those trappings isn't a member of that caste.

Since each and every one of us has been in the position of being harmed, of being the harmer, and of witnessing harm, we already have the ability to recognize multiple sides of a conflict. Perhaps it's the perspective of a chronic navel-gazer, but this seems wildly optimistic. I have absolutely been in situations where I was being abused but felt like I was the one in the wrong; I've done substantial harm (or at least, done things with the potential for harm) which make my skin crawl now but whi…

I remember when I was in college there was a speaker discussing the feminist nightmare that was Barbie. The speaker put up PowerPoint slides of little girls' Barbie brand underwear, and was extremely upset that the ur-example of restrictive body image was being sold on the undergarments of girls in their formative years. The feminist view of Barbie in 2023 is...subtly different, to say the least.

Oof. That mari et femme/man and wife double standard is tangibly painful. And yeah, weird that the takeaway when "gars is acceptable but garce isn't" is "women have it worse" and not "We're okay with using language for men that we would consider unacceptable for women". The fact I assume the thumbnail is alluding to, that "handcuffs" (esposas) is the plural of "wife" (esposa) in Spanish is also a red herring. They both share the same Latin root word as the English "spouse" (sponsus)--esposa, bec…

I think he brings up a ton of valid points, but it's perplexing how he starts out by being derisive that these problems are "white imperialism" on the basis that non-white people are fully-actualized humans and that ascribing all the world's problems to white people is noble saviage thinking...and that actually, it's patriarchy. Like which is it? Is heaping all of society's problems onto one group a subtle de-legitimization of the other groups' personhood, or is it all the fault of men? Again, c…

I asked what you were claiming the "wrong reasons" to be. If it's not profit, what?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates18/09/23 07:11 AM

That's an interesting take. Like...what are the "wrong reasons" you're referring to here? Profit motive? That is undoubtedly a factor, but like, it's hard to picture other people who get paid for doing useful things being told that the payment negates the usefulness.

I hear it all the time. The thing is, most of society (and ESPECIALLY most of society who actually have any kind of following in left-wing spaces) make zero distinction between "People who genuinely care about men's issues" and "vile misogynists". So any term that even implies the presence of maleness--like "manosphere"--is code for "vile misogyny". Don't get me wrong, many if not most of the guys people are talking about when they use that term are far from admirable, but I think that's by desi…

I've often thought that while there are male privileges, male privilege is a highly inaccurate way to characterize it. Women also have privileges that spend well in society. I liken it to arguing over which car is more capable, a sports car or an econobox. "Sports car privilege is being able to do 200mph on surface streets! All the cars you see in action movies are sports cars! Why do they get 'premium' gas while we're stuck with 'regular'?" Even if I wanted to do 200mph on surface streets, whic…

Boy some of these feel outdated. Not a lot of folks programming VCRs these days. And, a lot of it presumes home ownership, which...isn't as much of a thing as it was in the '80s. And, some feel like a negligibly small part of the time and effort investment that goes into maintaining a home; changing the clocks? Buying life insurance? Paying for life insurance, maybe, but buying it? That said, I'm a full-time homemaker. I do all of the "feminine" jobs like sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, cooking, l…

I think you're right that some of these are a bit of a stretch, or seem outdated. But...I'd say not as much as you might think. painting on a ladder in unsafe conditions for some reason, building windows, decks and concrete side walks by yourself, instead of paying professionals to do that for you. Like how common is this really? Maybe it is an American thing, but...pretty common. My mom is way more handy than my dad, and has done all of these things on a regular basis. This weekend she sent me …

This is a pretty big frustration for me. Like...if there are men who want to engage in hobbies and fashion choices that have historically been considered feminine, more power to them. But the privilege of being targeted by cosmetics advertisers is not one I've been yearning for. Lingerie's fine, but actually I'd like compassion and empathy, please, whether or not I'm not wearing a skirt at the time.

And my thought was always "I haven't even done anything. How can I "do better?"". I felt like I had screwed up before even trying. I hear this. I've often felt like, "Damn it, I haven't had enough sexual conduct to be accused of sexual misconduct".

I think this is a minority, but I've also seen it. Occasionally posts from r/egg_irl pop up in r/all, and some of the memes are...a little strange. I've seen quite a few that follow the format of "Character complains about certain aspects of their gender they find frustrating or consider disadvantageous--punchline is that this obviously means they're trans in denial, since cis people cannot experience dissatisfaction with traditional gender roles???" that's not what this author is doing, of cour…

Thanks for your perspective. In my (cis male) experience, most of the pressure to perform masculinity in a way that was toxic to myself or others came from women in my life, not men.

On the one hand, I think the author of this article makes a lot of insightful points—talking about the fact that boys are often treated worse than girls in ways you wouldn’t expect from the traditional gender narrative, that you don’t automatically get “male privilege” for being male, etc. On the other hand, it really feels like he’s still trying to insist that men or maleness are the problem, that even though by his own admission being male doesn’t entitle you to “male” privilege and being fema…

I think it's very easy to feel like your partner is weaponizing incompetence. My wife frequently asks for my help with tasks I have no idea how to do--usually technology- or automotive-related or dealing with entities outside the home (government stuff, service industry providers, etc.) And it's always a little weird for me, because it's like...you've been using a macbook for years now. I've never owned an Apple product. Why on earth are you asking for the help of someone with way less experienc…
