Thank you, friend. I am even luckier to have her.

My ex left when my daughter was 14 months old, and didn't even make an attempt to contact us for the first 3 months. Beside the fact that she left and abandoned her daughter, I still had to pay a lawyer $1200 to have a separation agreement written up (not to mention pull teeth until she would sign it) to have me designated as my own daughter's primary care giver. Unfortunately in Canada, the mother is considered the primary care giver by default because.. well.. if someone could explain that to …

That sounds easy, but as a single parent, your primary concern has to be your child. Sometimes they aren't old enough to understand the circumstances. They just know that Mommy or Daddy aren't there, and they miss them. Sometimes you have to put your frustration with the other person aside, even when you are the one doing all the work, for the sake of your kid.

Your definition of diversity isn't wrong, but basing diversity only on the demographics of race and gender is. 10 members of the same race or gender can possess extreme diversity amongst one another, despite none of that diversity being visible via skin tone or genitalia. Unfortunately for the diversity game, as with many things in life, optics often outweighs merit, or the sum of life experiences who made you the person you are today. Also, to understand the demographics of fire departments, yo…

Just because you have a group of 10 recruits, all of which happen to be white males, doesn't mean that group lacks diversity. It just lacks visible diversity. All 10 of those men could come from very different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and be enormously diverse from yourself and eachother. Imagine telling a group of 10 African men that "they are all the same." You'd be crucified. Treating somebody differently solely because of race is racism, whether they're getting a job out of i…

In a lot of cases, it's not a disproportionate number of minorities being hired as compared to the local population, but a disproportionate number of minorities applying. Our department wants to reflect the community it serves, but if only 5% of the applicants are female, for example, then we don't try to aim for anything above a 5% hiring of females. This, of course, is still based on those applicants passing the hiring requirements. Are there higher scoring candidates that are over looked? Mos…
