The only place I've ever heard refer to patriarchy as anything other than an abstract concept representing a society in which power is handed down specifically to the male next-of-kin is on this board, honestly. I didn't even realize it was such a controversial/misused word when I first started checking this out.

Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne's poignant tribute to his murdered childhood friend, Andrew Bagby, tells the story of a child custody battle between the baby's grieving grandparents and Shirley Turner, Bagby's pregnant ex-girlfriend and suspected killer. Initially, Kuenne made this documentary as a memorial for Andrew's loved ones, but it morphs into an emotional legal odyssey when Turner goes free on bail and is allowed to raise her son.

You really ought to see it, you can watch it on Netflix. Do it on a day when you have a LOT of time to cry and rage though, possibly harder than you ever have. It's the best movie I've ever seen, but it's also the most devastating documentary...ever. Whatever you're imagining happened, what really happened is worse. Don't look up spoilers before sitting it. It will hit you like a semi-truck. I agree that people have twisted the concept of patriarchy to be something that solely blames men, and I …

To be fair, in this case she IS critiquing a female judge for going along with antiquated notions. I think you guys misinterpret what is actually meant by "patriarchy," or what is SUPPOSED to be meant by patriarchy. It's not (or rather, should not be, when used properly) blaming a particular sex, it's just the name of a system that IN THE PAST was seen as perpetrated by men, as they were the ones directly inheriting power. We can see now has consequences for both sexes, that both sexes have demo…

Just finished watching it myself. I have trouble believing I'll ever watch a more emotionally affecting movie in my lifetime.

I can't think of any songs of hers that bash men as a whole. She has plenty that bash INDIVIDUAL men, but that's not a crime.

What clubs are you going to? Watching trashed women get escorted out of bars is half the fun.

Why not seek to create a place in the middle?
/r/MensRights29/12/11 01:15 AM

And, AGAIN, that's why I'm arguing for a new organization that seeks to advocate for the issues that benefit BOTH genders, not unfairly advocate for only one.
/r/MensRights29/12/11 01:10 AM
-2

For fucks sake, WHY do you guys keep assuming I want you to become feminists? I think both the feminist AND MRM have severe problems. I think INDIVIDUAL,feminists could be great allies to you if you we're able to get together and form a LARGER, bi-gendered organization fighting for anti-discrimination together. You guys keep saying "we've approached the feminists and they don't want to x y or z" but that's not what I'm trying to advocate for AT ALL.

I never said he was a woman hater. I acknowledge that my replies we're hasty and misguided though, I was unfortunately too flared up by other, more inflammatory users to reply more thoughtfully.
/r/MensRights29/12/11 01:06 AM

And another parting thought, if the whole debate simply trickles down to "fighting feminism," we've already lost.
/r/MensRights29/12/11 01:02 AM
-2

That's exactly my point though.,Feminism and the MRM will ultimately fail to be anti-sexist because they only focus on one gender each, and vilify members of the opposite gender, intentionally or not. The fact that I have been, accused of "hating men" for opposing some of the MRM or supporting some of the feminism movement, and have also been accused of "hating women" for the opposite proves that, no? I feel in this thread people interpreted my initial question as "Why don't we become feminists?"…

Other people in this very thread have identified THEMSELVES as anti feminists, though.
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:40 AM

I've made plenty of posts acknowledging that there are very similar problems with the feminist movement in this thread. In the very first post I acknlowdged I identify as a mens right activist as well as a feminist. Do not put words in my mouth when they directly contradict what I truly believe, please.
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:40 AM

And I've been labeled a "man hater" here for speaking against the standard men's rights dogma. What's the difference, exactly?
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:30 AM

But how would you ensure that the rise of the mens rights movement wouldn't actively hurt woman in the very same way the feminist movement hurts men?
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:29 AM

Fair enough. The responses to the very concept alone have indicated to me how difficult/impossible it just might be. Thank you for your input.

Why would any of the replies on this board lead me to believe you're trying at all?
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:25 AM

But were men denied voting rights based purely on their sex, as women were? You're really twisting this issue, buddy.
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:23 AM

Couldn't you use that EXACT logic to justify treating men as inferiors?
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:21 AM

Wouldn't a feminist similarly say "I will only work with the men's right movement if they stop blaming feminism for all of men's problems?"
/r/MensRights29/12/11 12:01 AM
2

I'm not asking the men's right's movement to join under the umbrella of feminism, I'm proposing the start of a new movement. Some feminists may not want any part of it. Some men's rights activists may not want any part of it. That isn't adequate reason enough for me for it to not exist.

How do you personally define patriarchy? Or, if you do not have a personal definition for it, what feminist definition of patriarchy are you referring to?
/r/MensRights28/12/11 11:44 PM

That's a simple answer: The KKK's primary mission is the eradication of black people. The aim of feminism is not to eradicate men: it is to end sexism directed at women. The aim of men's rights is not to eradicate women: it is to end sexism directed at men. As you can see, these two missions are SIGNIFICANTLY more compatible than the example you suggested. Not to mention that the analogy you're trying to use doesn't quite work. It would work better if you used the NAACP instead of "black people,…

On the same token, perhaps you shouldn't accuse people of being incapable of having a conversation with "regular people" when you seem to feel the need to resort to calling other's things like "retarded." I would think that someone claiming to advocate for the rights of an oppressed group would be a little more sensitive about using slurs against an oft-mistreated group of human beings.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 11:30 PM

That's not true at all, and in fact, it's this exact self-defeatist attitude that is hindering your movement so much. You both seek to end discrimination based on sex. Bang, one thing in common, easy.

How can you say you oppose the concept of "Patriarchy" when you, yourself, cannot supply a definition for it? I double-checked my sentence, and it all appeared to be in perfectly legible, grammatically correct English. I apologize that you had trouble understanding it, and I hope that my rephrasing has helped you understand.

In one conversation I'm having with you, you've resorted to name-calling. In this conversation, you've resorted to accusing me of being a liar, without giving specific examples of what I've said that is a "lie." I don't understand how you expect me to carry on an intelligent conversation with you.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 11:23 PM

But surely, if you oppose the concept of patriarchy as r/feminism defines it, are are, in fact, quoting it, YOU know the definition of it? Or are you seriously telling me you oppose a concept...without even knowing what it is?
/r/MensRights28/12/11 11:22 PM

I just fail to understand how you can not believe in something you don't even have a definition for. Seriously, if you hate it so much, it should only take about 30 seconds, TOPS, for you to draft up a basic definition of patriarchy, and maybe a few minutes more for you to tell me why it's factually incorrect. I don't know why you have to resort to name calling.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 11:19 PM

As a gay man, I can't say at any point I've really felt that I've "hated" men as a whole.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 11:17 PM

I must have missed the lesson where putting a word in quotes removed it from having a definition. Seriously, why is it so difficult for you to explain to me the definition of patriarchy you were using?

"Is "patriarchy" something that only feminist crazies believe in? Are men's rights groups responsible for accepting that they are privileged by "patriarchy" so they can work with others?" Right there. There it was, the term was used twice. By you.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:57 PM

I am asking the people who use that term. You guys are using that term right now.

I don't want to support a men's right organization right now for the same reason I don't want to support a woman's right organization. They seem far too focused on slandering the other side. I don't want to fund that.

Interesting that you know the details of my life despite having never spoken to me outside of Reddit. I've met plenty of feminists who recognize men's issues as real. It's just as someone said in the "PR" thread earlier today on this subreddit: This board's constant use of "feminism," which is an EXTREMELY broad umbrella as a scapegoat does you no favors.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:53 PM

You're basing this off of only one country though. In the U.S.A., for example, it was MUCH more than a "blink of an eye" between men and women's voting rights. YOU are the only one painting "men as women haters" and "woman as victims." This is why people don't take you seriously, you decide anyone who doesn't agree with you on every single issue must "hate men" and "spread hateful lies." It's ridiculous.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:50 PM

Ah. You're beyond help then buddy. Open a dictionary. The concept of patriarchy outdates feminism.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:50 PM

And one of your own in this very thread claimed sexism has NEVER affected women. What's your point?
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:48 PM

"you ever wonder why Men live shorter lives?" Really? That's all you've got? A generic entry-level-conspiracy question? Come on buddy.

"Well that's what are books tell young girls about boys....they are a less intelligent sub-species to be eliminated." ...Uh, source on this please? And I mean, not to be rude...but it's pretty funny that you chose this sentence to use the wrong "our."
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:46 PM

Uh, that would be my point as well, buddy. Hence the bi-gendered anti-sexism concept.

So you're going to let one issue completely stop you from making any progress at all? Furthermore, has research been done into why this inequality exists? Is there an equal demand for government health spending for men and women? I'd like to see your sources on this.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:42 PM

Okay, again, great. But that doesn't in any way, shape, or form prove that sexism doesn't exist against women, or has never existed against women.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:38 PM

If we could find common ground in our practical beliefs and make progress that benefited both groups, of course. What kind of question is that?
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:37 PM

Great. What's your point?
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:34 PM

Give me your definition of patriarchy, and explain to me why it is something that shouldn't be believed in.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:34 PM

Which board do feminists use primarily on reddit, then? I'll gladly crosspost. Of course, I'm pretty sure I already know what will happen: They'll post pretty much exact mirrors of what you guys said here, but somehow you all will continue to fight.

Except Republicans and Democrats have views that are ACTUALLY opposite to each other, in terms of social and economic policy. Men's right activists and feminists have a lot of the same ideas, just focused on different genders. Example: -Men are seen as untrustworthy around children because women have dominated the child-rearing role in history. -Women are seen as incompetent in the workplace because men have dominated the bread-winning role in history. If you guys would stop fucking villifying e…

I never implied they did, but you're certainly not helping the matters. And please don't act as though "shaming language" is something exclusive to feminists when you can dig around this board for about 5 minutes and find examples of you guys doing the EXACT same things. I think the problem is, as I said in the original post, you guys and feminists don't realize how much you actually have in common with each other. The biggest common element is you guys both like to label the entire other group …

"cooperation means one of us has to bow to the other." Good lord. Well, my initial question has definitely been answered.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:22 PM

And that is why you'll never make any progress. Thanks for answering my question, I guess.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:19 PM

Sexism is unequal treatment based on sex. Women were once denied voting rights. How is that not sexism, and how is it not wrong?
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:19 PM
-7

I'm not asking anyone to bow to anyone. See, that's why people have such trouble talking the Men's Rights movement seriously. You assume cooperating with women instantly makes you inferior.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:18 PM
1

"The fault for their being no 'humanist movement' lies SOLELY in the feminist camp." This doesn't make any sense. The blame for lack of union between two parties can never fall solely on ONE group. There's another comment in this very post saying sexism against women doesn't exist and has NEVER existed. In fact, your very comment contradicts itself.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:17 PM

You're kidding, right?
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:14 PM
-4

"Feminists want men to get under the feminist banner, because then they can co-opt it, silence the men, and get back to fighting only for women." Okay, see, this attitude right here is pretty much exactly the problem. You can't claim you guys are the cooperative/reasonable ones when you say things like this.
/r/MensRights28/12/11 10:12 PM
You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
