I have never heard of male prostitution in a civilized country during the time period I am referring too but it would be interesting to learn about. I know that men weren't allowed to sleep with men because according to Catholicism and every branch of Christianity ever it is sodomy. By the time the 1800's rolled around women (and men for that matter) were becoming much more independent and weren't quite as required to abide by such strict social rules, such as marrying people they didn't want to. As far as statuses go, if your spouse mingles with those who are 'lower' then you it can drag down the family name to be lower ranked. This goes for either men or women, but I have to say it's mostly women who received the bad rap for this.
