The vast majority of traditional gender roles are founded entirely in biology and the evolutionary advantages of sexual dimorphism. Ok, again, no one (at least I'm not) argues that 100% of gender roles are defined by social interactions. The point is, at least a significant part are created as a result of social cues. This isn't specific to anthropology. Like any science, people get better at it over time. And yes, at first, anthropologists were merely people who went around and mocked all the savages in the world. I don't think anybody is arguing that. Gender is partly a social construction. The concept is constructed via social interactions. Your ethnicity is socially constructed, as an analogy. Biologically, you can tell if someone is southern European, and genetically from the area we know as Italy.
