I didn't get it either, as a guy it is an expectation to be stoic and keep it all in, but it's rooted in protecting and caring for your family. Say you have a wife and kids, then grandma dies, now your wife and kids are devastated and so are you, but by being stoic and pulling your own emotional weight you can care for your family by helping pull their emotional weight too. Think of everything modern crazy feminists are saying is "toxic masculinity" and you got most of it, being a provider, protector, being strong in tough situations (not crying and being emotive) to benefit your family.
