Can you research the historical context on your own? Yes. But many of the resources are prohibitively expensive, and are free via college libraries because the institution then pays for them. Churches don’t have the time to teach the historical context of Scripture when they only have 15-45 minutes every Sunday to preach. “Cringe” Bible college? I learned more in a single class at college or seminary than I learned in 24 years of reading my Bible and attending church. One thing that really grinds my gears is that Churches require pastors to have 8 years worth of college and higher education, but then will only offer part time jobs for people right out of school, making paying off our loans quite impossible. It’s really discouraging when they have a requirement that they aren’t willing to pay you for.

By E-Free do you mean EFCA? The EFCA accepts both soteriologies as Biblicsl doctrine so you’ll find most of them are split between Arminian and Reformed. We usually get along quite well in our denomination. Source: Am an EFCA member for 14+ years
