It was the church forcing their power on people through making marriage part of the church and turning it into a legal contract. Back before the church got involved in the late middle ages, peasants and other couples just went and lived together and said they were married, as peasants didn't have anything the church could steal up to that point (now it's the government) they didn't really give a crap.
