20+ years teacher here, in a very tough school district, when a young man acts like this, my reaction is "honey, I've met you before and I know how your story ends" then after class I show him the other inside of my closet door, with dozens of articles about former students who've been killed or jailed for long periods. Most of the time, since it's a smallish city, the kid knows or has heard of some of them. Sometimes they come around.

Keep your eyes open for a male teacher who knows what's up. We are out there, in every school, but keeping a low profile. Someone who you can talk to. And if you are dealing with female or "woke" staff, leave misandry out of it and lean into that homophobia and racism and you'll get better treatment. Sad truth, but it is what it is.

Yeah. Give it 5 years. You will HATE it until you find your groove. Be there for the kids and do your thing. I regard at least half of my job is to stand between the kids and the bureaucracy. Once you find your space at your school, and get that tenure, it's great.

I like it a lot. I genuinely love teenagers, which makes it fun, and I stick around in the education field for my young men. So many lack father figures in their lives, and I often have heart to hearts with them after class consisting of, "stop chasing these girls; don't even worry about them, when you're 30 and have your life put together they will come to you, if you even want them by then." Funny how if you look at the stats and charts given, the story is totally different: chart 1-- job losses in 2009 vs 2020, more or less equal job losses today versus mostly men in 2009. List of career areas w high unemployment: most careers listed with about 40-50% women, except for education w 78%, but more than balanced out by construction and manufacturing, with 13 and 28%, respectively. Never let the facts ruin the narrative I guess.

American teacher here. I stay in the game for my male students. So many of them have no fathers at home, and few male role models, and they respond so positively to the small bit of male attention and regard I can give them. And I get to watch many of them grow into competent, confident young men.
