I am a woman and I agree wholeheartedly. Sex is just yoga when you make it about „getting laid“, something to brag about among your peers. But it can be so much more when you really love the person and they love you. It’s not only a physical connection, you create a spiritual connection if you go into it with the right attitude. An orgasm isn’t yet the best thing you can get out of sex, and you are missing out if you just go for that orgasm.

It really depends on what’s transpired beforehand, but as a woman, I can confirm that I find such a question asking for consent quite natural and a sign of respect which makes me feel (even) more comfortable with the man in question.
