Very good points (hadn’t considered Mrs Doubtfire, but yes - post-wall mother of three lands James Bond :p) As to the reverse, I would actually defend it on the following grounds: whereas the Sally Field/Bridget Jones/whatshername from Sex and the City scenario basically never happens, we can all think of examples of physically unattractive men shacking up with hot younger women, usually as a result of wealth or significant charm.

Well I suppose in that case she’s providing the safety net herself (the mass entry of ‘independent’ women into the workforce is a major factor here - singledom for mothers used to not be an option economically). True, but I think it’s more to do with the level of wealth of the society, and particularly women having access to resources to help them raise kids sans the biological father. Those ‘you gotta go here’ places don’t have functioning welfare states, typically.
