For some reason my reply didn’t post the first time - but it was: If I’m understanding this correctly, then it isn’t OP who grew up in a Muslim majority country - it was her BF. So I can respect and understand the mess of emotions he has around women’s clothing. It seems to be (if I’m reading between the lines correctly) that he didn’t like women who were forced into overly-modest clothes to be legally allowed in public in his first country. But now that they’re he’s not living in a Muslim major…

Yea - bag lady doesn’t sound great. Modestly is amazing, but our appearance is also a reflection of our husband. If our appearance negatively impacts how others see us, then we are negatively impacting his image as well. Modest but not baggy and outdated is probably the compromise. Having a modest and attractive wife can only boost a husband’s social standing which can affect his career success.
