You might regret not attending the funeral services but it's far less likely that you'll regret taking your son to pay your, and his, final respects and model for him what it means to take the high road. Make it something that you do for yourself and your son. It doesn't have to be more than that and nobody can fault you for that.

More the latter. We had issues in our marriage completely unrelated to JAF and the marriage most likely would have still failed even if he were never around. I think he just sped up the process a bit and gave my ex more incentive to end things. If anything, he probably saved me a few alimony payments. To add a little more detail: the other big mistake was not getting marriage counseling sooner. We started too late. If those 2 mistakes were avoided then we might have been able to save the marriag…

Just-A-Friend started coming around 3 years before the end of my marriage. She moved out and is living with him now. One of the biggest mistakes I made was not putting my foot down about that relationship. My ex-wife even agrees with that.

Even if she's not trying to you could still get screwed.

I think it's unwise to accept a buy out before the sale. Even if she's a professional realtor she has no clue what the house is actually going to sell for. You're setting yourself up to get fucked.

Lawyers will often be flexible on payment terms. You might get them to agree to taking a percentage of the value of the assets they recover or something. Just a thought. Never hurts to ask.

First things first: get a consultation with a lawyer for around $100 - $200. I'm going through a divorce in CO and can recommend an attorney. IANAL but the house is marital property so it gets split 50/50. she has also never contributed to ANY mortgage payments, insurance, utilities, etc That doesn't make any difference. Also doesn't matter if you're the only one on the mortgage or both of you are on it. You'll have to either sell the house and split the proceeds or buy her out of her half of th…

If there are no kids, no alimony, and no marital assets then what are you worried about?

Best thing you can do right now is pay a lawyer a couple hundred dollars for an initial consultation. Even better would be to get 2 or 3 consultations. If you have significant assets then I think it would be a mistake not to. I'm guessing you do have a claim to the stocks but IANAL. I doubt the verbal agreements are going to count for anything.

I have no advice but good for you for sharing here and recognizing your own emotional state with it all. Chalk it up to a learning experience.

Dear STBXW, I will be staying at the house for the foreseeable future. Warm Regards, OP

Yeah, that part helps with keeping things amicable.

Mine was the opposite. She stuck by me through severe drinking issues early in our relationship. Then once I got sober she gave me a harder time than when I was drinking. At 3 years sober she wanted to split. Of course, the "friend" waiting in the wings didn't help matters.

Good for you, man. I hope you reach out to the shy guy. You might just change his life.

IANAL. Be aware that, depending on where you're located, if she gets pregnant by someone else you may be legally and financially responsible for the kid while you're still married.

Sure, but that's not the point I was making. Between Broken Dad and Put-Together Dad, the latter wins every time.

Care for the caregiver. The more healthy you are (physically, emotionally, mentally) the better you'll be able to care for your kid.

My parents stayed together until my brother and I were well into our 20s and we're both fucked in the head so parents staying together is no guarantee that the kids are going to be okay either. Life is one big roll of the dice. :)

We tried for 6 months until the therapist said we should take a break from couples counseling and each focus on individual therapy. We made some progress but not enough to save the marriage. I think something paradoxical about couples counseling is that by the time you think you need it, it's too late. If you use couples counseling to proactively put issues to rest early on then I think it will improve the quality of the marriage. But entering couples counseling as a last ditch effort to try to …

I've Googled every girl I've dated for the last 20 years. I haven't gone so far as to run a background check but certainly check social media. The girls I've told have just laughed it off.

There's no way to avoid being cheated on don't spend a lot of energy trying. It's mostly a roll of the dice that you can do nothing to prevent. Get to a place internally where you know you'll be okay if it happens again.

This describes a lot of how I feel. Now that my STBXW is not around, it's a relief not being constantly criticized and put down for who I am.

If you rely on someone else to make you happy you're always going to be disappointed. My STBXW is like that and miserable.

Not totally. I'm only alive because my dad's second wife pressured him to reverse his vasectomy.

It would be nice to do something like that but the day has mostly been spent doing laundry. I'm shouldering the bulk of the parental duties right now.

There's that well-known story about Charlie Parker before he was famous getting kicked off stage because he sucked at the time. Then he spent a year honing his skill with a fire under his ass and came back to become a legend. The movie Whiplash (which is fantastic, btw) dramatizes it a bit. You sound like you're in a woodshed phase and the fact that you already have a solid plan laid out (gym, therapy, antidepressants) puts you ahead of where a lot of guys would be. We've all our confidence shak…

I moved out of state once, unrelated to a divorce or any relationship. I was single and without kids at the time. Moving out of state was something I had wanted to do for years and finally did it. I was super excited. New job, new house, closer to some family members. I looked at it as a fresh start. Once I made the move I started having the same problems I had at my previous home because my problems were internal and I brought them with me. A change of scenery is nice but if you're having troub…
