I understand that which is why limited term alimony or a lump sum payment to help someone get back in the game might be appropriate in some cases. But lifetime payments that factor in the income of the ex-husband's new wife?? Utter bullshit.

I agree with the reform. Alimony is an outdated concept left over from the days when men were the breadwinners and women stayed home with the kids. If the couple split and the woman had never worked and had zero marketable skills, she had no way to support herself so the ex-husband was on the hook. Sometimes one member of a couple does have to sacrifice his/her career for the career of the other. My mom is much smarter than my dad, holds a Master's degree, and could have built a nice career for …

To clarify: What I meant was that once the child is born, if one parent wants to raise the child, the government has decided that it is in the best interest of the child to be financially supported by both parents, even if the non-custodial parent wants nothing to do with raising the child. With adoption, the father still has to agree to relinquishing his rights. If he wants the baby, he can sue for custody and the mother will have to pay him child support. The mother alone can not surrender the…

If the child is yours, you are on the hook for child support regardless of how frequently you see the kid. You can sever physical ties but can not sever the financial responsibility. If this was possible, think how many baby daddies would be lining up at the courthouse to sign away their financial responsibilities. The government has decided that it is in the best interest of the child to be supported financially by both parents regardless of each party's interest in being a parent or how much p…

Exactly! Several years ago I was in a wreck where the other driver was at fault and she received a ticket. My car was repaired and my rental paid for. No problems, easy transaction. The problems came each and every time my policy came up for renewal. Since the girl who hit me had the same insurance company, they saw that they had paid out money on a wreck I had been involved in and kept trying to raise my rates. I would have to call, get them to confirm the other driver was at fault, and get my …

That's why you get quotes from several different companies as a consumer. When I purchased my last car, I called 6 companies, including the one I had my current policy with at the time and one that advertised constantly on tv as being low cost. 5 of the companies were very close to each other. The company that billed itself as low cost was DOUBLE the rates the big companies were quoting. So while you may be required to carry car insurance, you are not required to purchase from a specific company…

I carry a high deductible policy. I pay for the little stuff out of pocket but if there is a major expense, the insurance kicks in. I prefer it this way because it really makes me think before going to the doctor. I dropped a weight on my foot recently. My first reaction was to run to the ER for an xray. Then I realized I'd be covering the cost myself since I hadn't hit my deductible for the year and decided to ice it and rest instead. It was fine in the morning....no doctor visit needed. Having…
