without a single limb you missed the part where she was granted a special robot arm nobody realized the arm was formerly part of a robot designed using the same process as this robot

A lot of written sci fi tends to be bleak and cynical, so I'm impressed to realize that this scenario would be even worse than most fiction. Not just molesting, but molesting with a special robot arm that she was awarded. Imagine being one of the people who decided to award it to her.

According to a close friend who watches tennis more than any other sport, and is an open sexist and racist (asian upbringing/ethnicity even though he now lives in a western country), the umpire's behavior was ridiculous because, specifically, "the men do worse than this all the time and almost never get penalized". I don't know how true that is. I tried to pin him down on details but none were forthcoming; however he'd had a terrible day and is depressive to begin with, so his not having the ene…

Yeah, that's one of a number of reasons I deleted my account. Hanging on to friends like that was a disincentive for using the site.

When you know a group of people IRL, if someone you already know to be generally reasonable has what seems like an unreasonable opinion, it might be worth talking about it with them. You might also do this if they're a stranger. If you already know that they have a well established history of being particularly stupid or fanatic, well, I can't speak for you, but I think most people would consider it wasted time to argue with that person. In spaces like reddit where new accounts have no cost of a…

yes, that's true. I didn't see it become widespread until after in bruges, but that totally could be because I just wasn't noticing it before, so I believe what you're saying.

oh man. If you haven't seen In Bruges, I only wish I could watch it with you, on rabbit or something. It's such a fucking good movie, it really is. Go watch it now, I think I can guarantee you won't regret it (unless you loathe Bruges like Colin's character does). It is so fucking good. A lot of people, including me, never much cared for Colin Farrell before this movie, and now we're lifelong fans just because he was so fucking endearing and good in this role. And it's just... funny, intriguing,…

I feel a little sympathy for the attorney stuck with having to come up with a defense for her. I don't think there was any option that doesn't sound ridiculous, but they had to say something.

yeah. Pretty fucked that with the extremity of rape there, they're also the only ones who hand out serious sentences for false rape claims. Instead of doing shit about the actual rapes. And as you rightly point out, I'm very skeptical about this claim being false at all.

I did sit next to a guy manspreading a few weeks ago, it was obnoxious. And I think I've seen it (sitting across from it) three or four other times. I've been taking the subway here (NYC) for 14 years.

man that's just weird sending them to his parents. That won't hurt his reputation with them, but it'll utterly destroy hers.

American here, I've experienced it (though it wasn't the same experience these women are describing--it was massively frustrating but never threatening). I'm pretty fascinated that you haven't seen it, because it always seemed like a bizarre behavior from the people doing it, and now that apparently it may be cultural, I'm even more interested in wtf is wrong with the people doing it. Once I finally stopped a guy mid-sentence (I couldn't get a word in, and he'd talk essentially endlessly), after…

Why not have a no-interruptions study space? Where you have to sign in, the policy is prominently displayed, not taking "no" for an answer even once is grounds for being banned from the space, but having a penis isn't. As well as orientation seminars for the benefit of these weird guys who keep talking even when they're told someone doesn't have time for it. I mean that whole thing feels weird because being able to tell people to go away, when they aren't hearing it, is something that happens to…

(there are, after all, gender-specific schools, for instance). Are there, still? I know that there have been historically, but I thought all of the one-gender, one-race schools now accept anyone, though their demographics still lean overwhelmingly toward their original purpose.

Oh I did. And she is amazing, not in a good way, but I would seriously be fascinated to see a team of psychologists ferret out what happened in her childhood and her genetic predisposition to make her into this abominable chav. Christ, contemporary England really churns out the lower-middle-class monsters with a passion.

If anything was depending on my having accurate information, like it was a debating course and we were rated, I'd take that time and effort. In the actuality of reddit, well... there are some subs where comments are required to be adult-like (e.g. informed and civil), and I'm glad they're around, but it's still fun to just be a goofball in the casual default subs. I mean there's so much shitty misinformation and utterly hollow reasoning at large... taking the time to debunk them with care and re…

You know, I've always hated the "this isn't a pussy pass" commenters, especially since they would pop up in situations that were clearly pussy pass and the only thing they lacked was the woman explicitly saying she expected special treatment for being a woman. Those autistic nitpicking fuckheads really got under my skin at times. But this is one of the times I definitely would agree, there's nothing about it that indicates she expected a pussy pass--if anything, the sentence reflects a pussy pas…

It sounds like he'll be able to do it, though, because of the religious spin he's putting on all of it. I'm agnostic and not much of a proponent of religion, but if it lets you continue to trust people after something like this, that's worth something.

I can only guess you're being downvoted because people think you're trying to let her off the hook by saying that, although that's not how I read your comment at all. Pointing out how she got that way, and that it's tragic, doesn't imply that what she did now is ok or should be excused.

a while back in some thread or other I said something like "generally I've found that I really like lesbians" I got some raging response about how "lesbians are nothing liek the girls you see on skinemax, you prejudice idiot" yeah, I'd never said (or thought) anything about "porn lesbians", and I wasn't talking about sexual attraction, I was talking about feeling like there was compatibility in our personalities; and how, for whatever reason, I so often feel that way with lesbians (more so than …

this seems like saying if someone goes into a bank and robs a bank teller without announcing "this is a bank robbery", it doesn't count as a bank robbery, maybe kinda sorta a bank robbery, but really just a robbery...
