Realistically if you or your partner aren't willing to marry then to me that brings up red flags that they either aren't ready which can be fine or they can't accept that the don't have a 'not messy' way out. See divorce is result of a bad marriage which is a result of things that you control like cheating on your partner, never actually loving them but in it for material possessions, and such. It can also result in things like abuse that is out of your control. Yes the way divorces work out can be argued unfair but the point of a marriage is you both believe you will be together forever. Divorce comes from one of you failing and it has consequences.

To me it makes sence, it's a commitment that holds you together, you become '"1". It shows that you want to be together forever and that you won't just leave in 5 years.
