I've heard it comes from maternity leaves, lifestyle choices (taking easier jobs because they're usually the caretaker of their kids, etc.) and also because men tend to be more aggressive and assertive at work so are more competitive when it comes to promotions and assertive enough to ask for raises.

I have mad respect for those people that work their asses off doing manual labor for shitty money their whole lives. I feel lucky that I'll be doing something that's stimulating and interesting to me. I don't think I could handle factory type work

Well, the reason people moved away from those types of jobs in the first place is because they didn't want to slog around in someone's clogged toilet for the same amount of money as a guy that sits at his computer on reddit all day. Apparently the desk job is still more appealing to most people. A lot of those trade/blue collar jobs have the potential to pay well compared to a college degree (especially the crappy degrees) BUT the reason they pay well usually isn't because they can't find enough…

Education via the internet isn't going to help you find a job, unless you're a self-employed programmer/graphic designer or similar. $30k is pocket change if you're going into a well-paying field with a marketable degree. The trick is to make sure that the degree will pay for itself. None of that communications or ethnic studies bullshit.
