In most cases, it's kinda easy to see if something taking place is trying to normalize sexist ideas or behaviours. Just swap genders, and think what would happen. How would people react? Would the message still be the same? How would the media and your friends react? In this case, it's a lot better hidden, since it's using history as it's setting

I think most of them are legitimately convinced that they are victims at every turn. I don't think most of them are malicious, which is really tragic. Their worldview is too warped by the thought that they are oppressed by the other gender, and therefore, they look at the world that way. That's why they find things that no normal person would see as sexist, as some sort of attack on them

The worst part is that trying to discuss this with them while being polite and showing them that this "Mothers are better parents" narrative is provably false, will be seen as a personal attack. You can't convince or have an open discussion with someone who argues in bad faith

exactly. This victim complex is really toxic though, as if you cling on to it, then it makes it way easier to dehumanize them. If you dehumanize them, then you can justify injustices. Those injustices can range from small ones, like the situation you described, all the way up to what happens in divorce courts. "Since I'm the victim, then it's okay if I lash out. After all, it's fair". It's much harder to feel empathy towards someone whose problems you view as insignificant.

People aren't taught to try and understand another person's perspective anymore. Just give her time. she should calm down, and when she does, she'll hopefully try to see things from your perspective. It seems like you've already let her know that it's just the legal stuff you want to avoid, but the idea of marrying and living with her is fine to you.
