I want this kind of freedom. I’m just a few weeks away from finalizing. 3 kids, going to put into them what I can and be a damn good dad through it all. Unfortunately, my wife had become my best friend through our 16 yr marriage. It was super toxic and I sacrificed a lot of who I am through it, but either way. I’m a very personable guy, great with people in general. But being alone is making me nervous. I’ve got a GF, kinda, but I’m also trying to make sure I’m healing up from the years of BS th…

I had the opposite situation I guess. My STBX would have kept living with me forever before she got a job (also a stay at home mom). I had to put my foot down and tell her it was time to finally split. You must have a drop dead date when things will happen. You also need to decide on your level of relationship with the kids. How involved you want to be and such. Make sure you are involved in their planning or you won’t be happy with the outcome even more than you already won’t. I also started da…

There is life on the other side, and the best part is you can make it whatever you want. Figure yourself out, what you want and don’t want. Eventually you’ll find someone that will match you better

It’s not even close to the same situation. And, I still sympathize with my STBX simply because I made a promise to her, and even though I may not be with her, I still care very much that her life is as good as possible.

You’re a creep. It’s creepy to look back on someone’s crap that they need help with. Yeah, it’s a public thing, but it’s still creepy. The person either needs to get counseling (super helpful), or they need to try and focus on something else. This is a very normal thing to happen, anyone could slip into this kind of track.

What a horrible thing to say. The dude is hurting, and going through this kind of thing is hard. Clearly he wants to respect the boundaries or else he wouldn’t have gone an entire week without talking to her plus coming onto here about it. I mean, seriously, if you were in a group and a guy said I need help, would you really look at him and say this kind of thing?

Personally I’d say you’ve got too much stacked against you to make a split. Best to swallow your pride and serve each other the best you can. Therapy can help, but only if your willing to make changes.

That’s a very sad outlook. Or maybe I’m just overly optimistic. But it seems like so many people on here just think everything is destined to fail

I get it. I was fortunate in that growing up, I’ve got 4 sisters. My parents spilt when I was young, so my view of women is different than a lot of guys. My mom was very strong and she made sure to do very well for us. But I am a fairly perceptive person with people (been in sales and management for quite a long time). So I get, for the most part, how the female mind works. I also have 3 daughters. I am nowhere close to an expert, I just have learned to trust my gut.

TBH for me, at 36, I can’t imagine not sharing my life with someone. Not a friend, but a mate. Someone that I can wake up to and make coffee or tea for. Someone that can share all the ups and downs and knows my deepest thoughts. And I want to know someone that closely. Yeah, things happen and people get hurt, but I also know that I get stronger by having a person that can challenge me in ways that even the closest friend can’t

I don’t understand this concept of not thinking your SO is not one of a kind. I get that there are plenty of fish in the sea, but none have her voice, her her mannerisms, her hair, or her anything. Sure, some could be similar, but I have never had someone inspire me to be better for me. To know when to push and to know when to hold back. And I love her temper. I love how much she loves me. She tries to fight it, as do I, but it’s too hard to. Im not saying I couldn’t find another woman, but none…

Actually, that structure helps quite a bit. Having segments makes “chunks”. So while looking at it with those headings it’s way easier to digest. And yeah, she is a fuckin unicorn lol. I don’t understand why ppl HAVE to look at your post history. It’s kinda weird. But thems the rules. I tend to be a very upfront and direct person, I have to be in my job. So apologies for not being so eloquent

Didn’t mean to strike a chord. Just giving some feedback, that shit was long. So long that I didn’t want to start and get halfway through just to find out that it sucked. And I read 20+ books a year ranging from leadership, to economics, psychology, history. Not exactly ignorant

Hey, I’m not saying there’s not any good info in there, just that it was really long

Sorry to be a dick, but how many people actually read this novel of a response?

You truly don’t know the circumstances. I’m also not wanting to just jump head first into it. All I’m wanting to do is date, not move in together. My kids are my first priority, and I have to make sure that I am good and healthy for them before I do anything else. I know there’s a pretty good chance this new relationship won’t work, and I’ve come to terms with that. She is pretty damn amazing though, and I’m a pretty picky person. I don’t have really high standards, I just know what I like.

The good thing is I can see she is doing what she can to back off. She wants me to be able to fully go through the healing process, which I already have for a large part. Hell, just finally telling my wife I wanted a divorce was a huge step for that. She doesn’t want to apply pressure at all

That’s great advice. I’ve been trying to follow this pretty closely. It was difficult to look to myself for happiness, but after a lot of reflection I do. Feel pretty damn good about it too

Well, the first one I was barely 21 when I got married. I tried, for a very long time, to make it work. I can’t say that it was a one sided problem, but I did work on myself a tremendous amount over the last 4 years. I’m happy where I’m at. I’m also comfortable with basing my life on what I want and think it should be. Whether this woman is with me on the other side or not, I’ll be ok. But she is pretty damn special

I have a 50/50 schedule with my ex, it sucks not seeing them every day, but at the same time it gives me time to recoup and be me, so I can give it everything when we are together. In fact, it was part of the reason I wanted to divorce in the first place. My kids saw me every day, but telnet saw an asshole all the time. Now, I’m building a much better perspective, so it’s way better for them

What about counseling? That can work for a lot of people. Trust me, as I’ve gone through divorce, it’s not easy. Burst the same time, if it’s really not going to work, it’s not. Better to cut it off early than go through years of crap just to get divorced anyway.

I’m splitting after 16 years of marriage. Court date is in one month. My STBX and I agreed on me paying SS until she got married and since we are doing 50/50 parenting, no need for child support. She came back from her attorney saying that she could screw me since all of our family’s debt is in my name. So she is taking me for CS even if she gets married. I also pay the taxes on all the CS and she gets to claim our kids just as much as I do on taxes, even though I’m paying for everything else

Divorce earlier rather than later. I waited way too long, now my payments are higher, she turned the kids against me, and I missed out on trying to find someone else sooner
