Yes! Everyone on TRP needs to read Mark Manson, extensively. He's not perfect, but he shares some of the positive things about TRP while excising a lot of the crap. Both TRP and MM distinguish themselves from most PUA stuff by an emphasis on being vs. just doing. Be alpha. Be vulnerable. In other words, inner game. A lot of the time though, inner game stuff is just fluff, but Models gives you specific advice on how to develop it. The difference between TRP and MM though, is that Mark maintains a…

I'd say "...and it's not just a social construct, and you don't have to assume that every gender role is prima facie a terrible, awful thing." But yeah. Being raised by feminists, this is probably my biggest takeaway that was unique to TRP, i.e. wasn't just rehashing seddit.

Furthermore, the internet allows people with similar experiences to come together and reinforce their opinions, whether their views have any merit or not. It has the potential to be dangerous unless we can find a way to educate our children to be aware of their biases. Well said. Ironically, this is a serious problem not only with TRP & MRM, but also with feminism in the age of Jezebel, Shakesville, etc. All of them have a serious problem with failing to challenge or critique their foundational …

I mostly agree with you except when it comes to alimony, which can be very financially significant. IANAL, just a law student, and I haven't taken this class yet, so take everything I say here with an enormous grain of salt. But you touched on one of my major problems with alimony as far as I understand it. I will revisit this issue after I take Family Law, but for now I do know that everyone I've talked to that has taken that class (male or female) comes out of it with a new fear of marriage. A…

I agree; I don't deny the sort of discrimination you are referring to.

Farming and hunting do not constitute, in my view, "building civilization". To me, that basically means achievements that advance humanity through the ages. Men created the technologies, structures, polities, and institutions that distinguish civilizations from random smatterings of population, and allow them to persist through history. Until recently, there were few exceptions. I would concede that women had a "role in the development and maintenance of civilization" - but they did not build it…

That's interesting to hear. I am more familiar with breakups than divorces myself to be honest, at my age. Much smaller sample size for me, but I have definitely seen many episodes of loss of emotional connection on the part of the female. Your experience still gives me pause, though. It's a statistic that I'd really love to be able to convincingly explain.

You're right about individual relationships - they're all different. On aggregate, though, the effect could be coming through. Again, I'm not confident one way or the other, I'm just throwing this out for discussion. But tell me, have you spoken to many people about their divorces/breakups? How many times have you heard of women "falling out of love" vs. men? Again, anecdotal, riddled with confirmation bias etc, just food for thought.

Can you actually not see how gender differences in the "fickleness/flightiness" of love would explain the divorce discrepancy? Speculation can still be logically sound. Correlation often suggests causation.

I agree wholeheartedly with your first paragraph but not with your second. First, I'd change the wording a bit: For most households women are asked to shoulder the burden of raising children. So their work requirement increases, while their husband's doesn't change much stays roughly equal to theirs. It's important that they have the freedom to choose, but I do believe that women are more predisposed, both culturally and physically, to childrearing. You can see in Sweden, with their far more rad…

That's straight up crazy and I don't think it represents TRP posters' views for the most part. It is even rare on TRP to see people advocate a return to 1950s-style culturally mandated housewifery. It is a long cry from thinking male-dominated relationships thrive to that. I know you're not accusing TRP people of actually holding those views, I'm just marveling at the worldview. Yes, many TRP posters espouse unfounded stereotypes about women's capabilities, but I believe that the actual reality …

Men have the most advantages in this world This is the thing... in 2014, I think male/female power dynamics are complex enough that we can't just accept this statement a priori anymore. Feminists are right about "male privilege" a lot of the time, and MRAs are right about "female privilege" a lot of the time. IMO both genders have relatively balanced abilities to succeed right now, so I'm not particularly interested in the who's more oppressed pissing contest. Where TRP hits the nail on the head…

Yes, hence my reluctance to clearly define my position. It's a hunch, not a firmly held view. But if we have no other explanations, it seems probable.

Advice like this is exactly why TRP/PUA stuff exists. Just be a nice guy, and all will be well. It is profoundly unhelpful for guys who are already doing this stuff yet are not getting what they want in terms of sexual relationships - of which there are many. And being a shallow, disrespectful, objectifying jerk does not prevent you from getting laid. I'm not condoning these behaviours, I'm just refusing to join the author in fantasyland.

They think that feminism should have taken up men's issues too. Yeah, I think the source of a lot of the anger is that there is only one group that's really been talking about gender for the past 40 years, and it's feminists. And they deliberately excluded men from fully participating in those discussions. They got some things wrong, and with men who feel they've been disadvantaged by these mistakes, you sometimes get pissed off dudes ready to buy what guys like Roissy and Elam are selling.

Warning - this is a long post and I'm not actually a self-identified "redpiller", though I do believe I'm arguing for core RP views here. I appreciate TRP in one of the same ways I appreciate Paglia - they're wrong a lot, but they also have a knack for exposing and eviscerating a few sacred cows on the way. (also, they help me get laid.) I think if a guy has unrealistic expectations/demands for his partner, that's his own damn fault - he should choose better and communicate his desires better. A…

This is a great question. I think there is likely something behind the basic TRP view that women's romantic love is more fickle or flighty, given that women initiate the majority of divorces, and (in my anecdotal experience) the majority of breakups as well. On the other hand, I think a lot of TRP writing glosses over the fact that a man's love is generally conditional as well.

The Oedipus thing is a common refrain. The qualities that made my mother a good parent and a feminine woman would also be welcomed in a prospective partner, yes. That doesn't mean I want to bang my mom, or I need a psychoanalysis session. I just don't like the reflexive denouncement of traditional gender roles that has been part of feminism since Friedan. This really goes to the heart of my biggest personal beef with feminism that I think a lot of TRPers would have beef with too. Traditions aren…
