You would need security clearance. I’m not in the UK but where I live companies would do the security clearance check - ton of paperwork to fill. There is now a new development: small modular reactors. Keep in mind that current generation reactors are still based on designs used for military purposes and are really huge. SMRs are a fresh new design with the sole intention of producing electricity. The small modular design should also hopefully remove the need for a good chunk of the regulations.
