If you are living in a city it is an option to not have a car. When I was living in Berlin I didn't have one because it was more trouble than useful. Now I am living in a rural area. Without a car you will not be able to take part in any activity, neither shopping for groceries, going to work or bringing building material to your house. What I agree is rather an old car I can pay instead a fancy I have to buy on a loan. Same for housing...

If someone really is going to auction an item on Ebay and not selling it for a fixed price it is a lot more reasonable, too. My favourite source are retrocomputer conventions and meetings. I find it very funny how some people can believe BTC is somehow a disaster prove way of storing value. It highly depends on two civilizational achievements: a lot of energy and Internet. Guess what's first gone in case of SHTF. Another problem: The entity controlling over 50% of the BTC-network is controlling the blockchain. In case of SHTF this network becomes very small and so even a small group of people or a single state actor can overtake it.

No, Im not working in a museum, but if it goes on like it did in the past I probably will. :-) ​ I agree if it would be about the information but it is not. My father tells the same. He has some old synthesizers (Moog etc) and later models like the DX-7. When he stopped performing on stage he gave away the modern stuff and kept this for exactly the reason you told.

I mined some 120 bitcoins in the beginning when it was worth only Cents. It was more like playing around with it to understand the system. When it all became crazy I took it aside and didn't care much about it. In 2018 I sold 40 bitcoins and still have the rest. We will see how it develops. As long as people believe it has value it will have value. Because I have other sources of money I don't need to sell it. If it becomes worthless I don't lose anything, either.

It's not about utilisation. It's about preservation and documentation. Nobody uses the old pots in a museum anymore but it is important to keep it. It's our cultural and technological heritage. It's the same with old cars or motorbikes. Modern vehicles are better in any way but it is still fun to drive the old and do all the stuff to keep it running. Software emulation sucks big time. I actually did on an Acorn RiscPC 700 around 2012 or 2013. At this time I played around with Bitcoin, mined a few but didn't and still don't take it serious. To me it's a big Ponzi scheme.

The C64 is not that old, it's more in the middle range of retro computing. My PDP-8 from 1965 is old. ;-) ​ But you are right, the C64 most likely works after nearly 40 years. Sometimes the diskette drives needs cleaning but that's usually all to be expected. Amigas are different. Just a few years younger but have massive capacitor problems. It's still easy to fix as long as no battery leakage killed the board.

VIC-20 was also my first computer. Only 3.5k of free RAM but I could do so much with it. It was magic! I envy you for the Falcon. I am still looking for one. ​ I also have a MISTer-FPGA here to play around. It is pretty close to the original now but that's not the point. I like to collect and preserve the original machines. It is part of our cultural heritage and unfortunately many was abused and not taken care of for decades. There are less and less unmodified or undamaged systems in existence.
