> I hope that by 30 you’ve built enough savings that buying a property is something you can do without scrambling. This only works if you're a beneficiary of generational wealth or had good professional fortune. The average American is a first-time home buyer at age 35-40. I appreciate the hope though

It worked for me for two women (I moved in together with the second one) but it never stops feeling a little embarrassing. It will probably factor heavily on your relationships with your family and what that looks like. I doubt I can dissuade you from trying (lord knows I couldn't have just put it aside), but definitely view it as something to get out of your system so you can focus on what matters -- financial independence. And since no one ever posts context, I'm pretty average in terms of con…

Not a bad take. This quickly becones a discussion on what self-respect looks like, and where (if anywhere) compromise (or settling) fits in that picture, which is outside the scope of how deep I'm willing to dig my heels in here. It's a bit all-or-nothing for my taste, but I can't say it's wrong.

Anyone can change their mind, of course. But if one noisy signal is enough to give up hope, that doesn't speak well to the guy's frame. Now objectively speaking, she not only asked for his number, but she did it through another woman, which opens her up to a strong degree of social vulnerability. That's high investment, which in itself should read as an enthusiastic yes. Supposing she is enthusiastic, she might have panicked just as much as he is right now. We can agree to disagree, but I wouldn…

Except this doesn't explain why she asked for his number -- through a third party, no less. He's right to suspect she's genuinely shy, which changes the math.

Rest assured that she probably has a support system she's reaching out to as well. Most people have coaches in the game. Her delay might just be asking the council their opinion, which will have much more to do with how they see her and a bit of what you look like on paper. Usually they're in it for the story, so I think your odds are good. If she is indeed shy, they might be trying to psych her up. You handled things perfectly. She came to you for your number, which means she definitely likes y…

It's not a no, but it's not worth your time. For the amount of energy it takes to try and turn the tide, you could make inroads with several people who will actually like you out the gate

Expand your understanding of what you see as yourself. fwiw, I'm a similar kind of person. Your notion of 'repression' sounds a little likr how depressed/adhd people worry medication will tamp down their 'spark'. I know the concern well, but the truth is it's unfounded. some food for thought: You probably act this way as a sort of nervous pressure-valve. It feels like fun, but what it offers is an artificial sense of control of the situation. In effect, though, the energy you give off is likely …

As others are saying, what even constitutes 'masculine' is cultural. Some will fetishize it more than others. Definitely decide if the YOU would want the woman who would want you to be more masc. With that said, many of the qualities that underpin masculinity do not necessitate a beard and a cowboy hat. Women want to feel safe -- not just from you, but from others when you're around. This is physically, emotionally, or financially depending on her personal values. They admire your confidence so …

Apps will suck because they're built on measurable metrics. you need to learn to intentionally join/build social circles. This, done correctly, will get you face to face with women much more frequently. As an added bonus, you come with a certain amount of proof that you're not some weirdo, because you have mutual friends which means someone they're socially compatible with is also compatible with you.

She's venting. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that what someone says reflects flawless self-awareness. She's engaged in the perfectly normal, non-gendered behavior of assuming how she feels in this moment (or even a handful of memorable instances) is how she feels all the time. rant incoming: This, btw, is why social media is breaking us as a society; we as a species are not mentally equipped to have unfiltered access to strangers' unfiltered thoughts. Passivity isn't the benefit of the mindset, detachment is. Here's a quirky example: I have a habit of trying to block people when they toss trash into a wastebasket. I think it's funny when I manage to intercept the garbage. But obviously, it's just a dumb little game I play with myself and friends. It comes with a few lessons, though. I don't care if I miss. Again, it's literally just swatting paper balls and tissues out of the air. I don't lose sleep or anything if they make it past me. It's p…

the problem is, reading those fanfics is like watching a gymnast or martial artist and saying "I copied them, so why isn't it working?". Those athletes are paying attention to subtle cues; they already have their weight in the right place; they know where to break rules to compensate for their own unique center of balance. This is why they'd tell you that trying to learn their artform without a coach is difficult and ingrains bad habits. That said, I don't advocate for dating coaches, because th…

With an attitude like that, you're gonna have a hard time staying single. If you can radiate that kind of carefree energy, and balance being non-threatening to women with showing them you don't let yourself get pushed around or denied (i.e. you're assertive and can be threatening when you choose to be), you've basically already won. That mindset is the best thing you can have. Second best would be wit, and third would be big arms. Maybe hit the gym?

There's a guy I know who has an occasional (but serious) stutter. Neurological I think, based on how it presents. But the man is a pillar of a community group we share because he's positive, outgoing, and has shown himself time and again to be a natural leader. If you spend 20% of your speech stuttering, that's 80% of your speech that can be used to say things people find valuable and build connection.

fwiw, if we as men don't look at metrics besides physical attractiveness in the same way, we're honestly living up to a lot of the stereotypes made about us. And I mean, we can't will ourselves to value something we don't, but usually it's a matter of perspective (on those values) rather than biological nature.

Just like most women are afraid that men around them could be dangerous, about as many men are afraid of coming off or being percieved as dangerous. For that reason, they'll usually disregard vague signs (which a lot of flirting is). It is very okay for women to be persistent with men, imo, because unlike women, men face (basically) no repercussions to saying 'no'. Good men will usually also need you to draw really clear lines about what is and isn't okay. The bane of my existence is a woman who…

Ever had a coworker or classmate who took a lot of pride in their work? They didn't have to TELL you they took pride in it, I bet. When people care about the quality of something they're working on, and care enough to put in effort every day to reach its potential, it's impossible not to notice. You're the same way. If you keep putting effort into yourself every day, the way you might a friend or loved one, eventually it will be impossible to hide how much value yourself and the opportunities yo…

This could literally have been written by my current partner. I'm very experienced, and it's literally her first relationship. So I'll tell you what I try to tell her: you're focused wayyyyy too much on performing. Sex is not for the other person at your level. Being a selfless lover as a beginner is just gonna hold you both back. What I want you to do instead is treat him like an inanimate object -- something that can't judge or thing, and (at best) plugs into a wall. Keep your mind entirely on…

I gave up on dating apps and leaned hard into building my social circle (and romantic options) in-person. If I ever took the time to use apps again, it would be in the same way someone casually buys a lottery ticket -- not expecting anything, but "you can't win if you don't play" kind of attitude. I don't do great at cold approach either -- I could probably get better with effort, but as it stands, I get caught in my own head. Ironically, it's not a problem if my intention isn't romantic -- can …

A good haircut is an absolute game changer for men. Absolutely your lowest hanging fruit. If you have female friends, have them help. I cut my hair a lot shorter (I was always self-concious about my climbing hairline, so I insisted on keeping it long) and immediately got positive feedback. It is worth it here to be adventurous and risk a month or two of having a bad haircut, because finding the right one is damn near everything. What do you consider your strengths? are you witty? can you make people laugh? big social circle? good features? skillful? been to therapy? anything else? You're tall, which is always a plus, but you're damn lean at 150lbs. Not a bad archetype, by any means, but it gives you a certain 'brand' that you'll want to consider. If it doesn't harmonize with the rest of you as a person, it doesn't offer much of an edge off the apps (where you will be included in significantly more search results). Pitch…

Just good advice in general. I've started making it a rule to never pull out my phone during conversation (with any number of people), even if I want to look something up or confirm something. I just noticed it always torpedoes my engagement with the other person/people. People are bad at self-assessing emotions. Gender has nothing to do with it. The real problem is that people rationalize and justify emotional reactions (such as attraction). That's all I'm saying. I believe you know what you want in a relationship. I'm skeptical you (or anyone. Even myself) has a good instinct on what actually gets their heart fluttering. Edit: having read a few of your responses, I'd make an exception for you (regarding having poor self-assessment) to what I've said above, bec…

tl;dr I (respectfully) somewhat disagree, but probably not in the way you'd expect, and my skepticism isn't gender-specific. A guy who cleaves too closely to womens' advice loses his edge; turns into a Nice Guy. These guys are good on paper, but women will usually walk away feeling like there "wasn't a spark". Eventually nice guys get bitter because it's invalidating to see hundreds of thousands of posts of what women want, which describe them perfectly, yet they're disqualified after a date or …

Disagree. Even golden retrievers can bite. "I see a side of him no one else does" is a cliché women love. And people give their trust too freely all the time, so calling him safe doesn't mean anything. Goldren retriever energy also means socially competent, outgoing, and therefore, high potential for status. If you think golden retriever isn't a viable strategy, you lack imagination, or at least solid execution. There's surely a way to play it wrong, but that's true of any archetype.

This, but you'll struggle to fake it if you're too desperate. A desperate guy acting confident is still pretty pathetic. You need to get a certain understanding of what makes you happy and what your priorities are outside of women/kids/etc. Once you can effectively fulfill yourself indefinitely on your hobbies, ambitions, and exploring new interests, THAT is where grounded confidence comes from. In my experience, your gut instinct is right. Even if you're a good lookin guy (congrats btw), it will read as "my abs are my personality" unless the photo has an 'excuse' baked in -- at the beach, pool party, Hawaii, etc. .The idea you want to convey is "look what a fun life I have (and you could join) -- whoops I accidentally flashed my rockin bod" not "This is to convince you I'm worth your time."

Make it easy doesn't mean they'll leave their comfort zone (e.g. taking rejection risks like approaching). It means they'll ignore your fuck-ups and fixate on your successes. Tripped on your way walking up to her? She's charmed by your silliness. Made an off-color remark? How bold! If she likes you, she rationalizes your behavior in the best light possible. If she doesn't, the voice in her head will be as critical of you as yours is.

Had a "friend" convince my ex to leave me for him. It was cowardly and backhanded. Even to a stranger, let alone a friend, I'm never going to sink to that level. If I did, I'd be validating that it's just how the game is played; that people are just animals looking to rut, and love can never be real. But they were just dogs. I'm no so desperate that I need to ababdon all standards just to get my dick wet.

While the approach seems misled (not that I'm an expert), I gotta give you props for going in there and being fearless. Reddit's gonna be focused on the failure, but putting it on the line several times in a row takes tenacity. I agree with what the others are saying here, though. I'm reminded of women (and some men) who go to the gym and say, "I don't want to get too bulky". I promise, if it could happen on accident, I'd "accidentally" be 3x as big as I am. NcSounds like they can tell you're trying to hit on them. Value in this context is clearly not 'getting hit on' (it sometimes is). But plenty of people can percieve value in 'had a good conversation about something I care about'. Rather than lead with anything like 'hello' or 'hi my name's sumimigaquatchi, try just opening with an observation or question. Say you're in line for groceries. I'd say you need a vision -- a sales pitch of your life, and a thoroughly thought-out one. This doesn't mean you whip a power-point out on the second date, but you should have a confident and decided stance on everything that matters to her. Early on in my dating, I joked about building 'dad lore' and the girl asked if I wanted kids. I stumbled and kinda gave her an 'idk open to anything' answer, which was wrong. A better answer would have been 'yes, but not now'. I know this partly because I've…

Be direct and relaxed. If they get the impression you're "planning something", that uncertainty will put them on edge. If they get the impression you're reactive, that will put them on edge. Your personality and history can be mysterious, but she should be absolutely certain how you're going to act in this interaction. The balancing act here is to, as CrazyRepulsive said, act normal. Being direct is good; having zero filter or social sense loops around into being a liability. The idea that you a…

Well yeah. Morals aren't meant to make things easier. If the moral thing was the easiest, everyone would do it. Fwiw, it might be worth reflecting on whether her actions suggest she preferred to hear the truth, or believe in a romantic lie. Whether that changes your outlook depends on whether you're honest because you believe in it, or if your morality exists just to make other people pleased with you. I'm not judging either way.

No matter who you choose to be, you will attract people who agree with your values. If you value respect and act accordingly, you will be unable to maintain connections with disrespectful people. If you wish to maintain disrespectful people, it's as easy as abandoning your self-respect. Do that, and you can probably have these people back in your life indefinitely. Choice is yours.

I worked in a cafe where these interactions happened. The only time it was an issue was the older customers who made concerningly forward remarks to my team. Or they repeatedly showed obsession with particular team members. Were I in this position, I'd phrase it "Could I get your number on your next ten (-minute break)?" This lets you be direct, but gives her a lot of wiggle-room to back out if she's not interested. If she says her ten is coming up, you can wait and make some plans. If she says …

You can get very far with men by explaining certain "non-masculine" things as functional tools. We're very big on cause-and-effect. For example, when I try to explain why men being emotionally unavailable is a problem, I point out that knowing how to navigate emotions makes you more effective at making others feel safe. Suddenly therapy looks less like curing a deficiency (which most people will feel ashamed of and deny) and more like mastering a craft.

Focus compliments on their choices, not inborn traits. Fashion sense, good taste (in whatever they're ordering, listening to, etc), and any talent they demonstrate. Generally speaking, yes. Despite the horror stories you see, the average person is flattered to have people show interest up until it becomes inconvenient. Even pretty people can be hooked on the rush of validation from someone less attractive to them. Think less about getting chosen and more about making your attempt a positive interaction -- the kind that gets bragged about (or even giggled about if you botch) and not the one that causes grimaces and concern when she tells it again. You're gon…

Sorry that happened, man. Good on you to uphold your self-respect. It's a hard choice, but a pattern of prioritizing your own worth will draw better people towards you.

I'll add, if this is genuinely as healthy a relationship as she says, it's not unreasonable he'll offer to be primary caregiver in that circumstance

Absolutely. Younger women definitely have it easier being conventionally attractive, but women over 30 are remarkably more interesting to spend time with. Take decent care of yourself and your won't be a setback to anyone with taste.

Any time a woman acts in a way that's stereotypically masculine, we notice. It'll rub some people the wrong way, but... that's kinda what masculinity does -- makes you controversial but memorable.

You know.what friends do? They talk to each other. Sometimes not even about easy stuff. jfc.

Most boyfriends will be chill if you're polite to them as well and gracefully exit the conversation. I'm not even interested in a taken woman. But I'm also down to fight if he's gonna insist on it, so there's that. A man's gotta have standards.

I'm also reasonably age blind. I accidentally offered a friend's cousin a beer at a party, only to discover he wasn't old enough to drink. Whoops. So consider this: the gross/wrong part of seeking out underage women is their inability to give informed consent. This creates an imbalanced power dynamic that is dangerous for the girl. Your actions made it clear that you're not interested in abusing an imbalanced power dynamic or taking advantage of someone like that. I follow the "half your age plu…

I'm in pretty good shape, if a little lean (5'10, ~150lbs, 14%bf). People tell me I look like I work out; I hear it a few times a month. Hairline mildly receding at the temples, but I keep it with a cut I really like and style it. I do use a moisturizer/sunscreen, but no retinol. I definitely don't get approached by strangers (though if I'm being honest, lots of people seem receptive to my casual conversation). Do you think you've got an exceptional facecard? Or attribute it to something else? M…

I've been passionately in love with people (who felt the same way) and a blunt approach like that wouldn't work well. I'm afraid you fundamentally misunderstand how much of a dance this is. Attraction does not result in immediate romantic tension; that's something that must be built. Attraction just determines if you'll be invited to dance.

Gentle is an okay term. Womanizer is probably the one you want to find a synonym for. It carries connotations of doing emotional harm, which clearly is not your intent. The simple truth you need to accept, as true in romance as anywhere else, is that being ethical is tying a hand behind your back. If it was just as easy, everyone would do it. I respect you for taking the hit though in the name of your integrity, and since you're doing it, lean into it. Make it you.

Wait, kissing with closed eyes or kissing her on her closed eye? The first one makes sense, but I can't picture the 2nd. Hella niche.

Not too late to get in shape! I started for all the 'wrong' reasons and would never look back now. I'd still do it if it actively made me less attractive to women at this point.

My brothers. I imagine some women think we're in this sub to manipulate them (pick-up artistry associations and all), but frankly I'm just here so I can actually offer them the romantics they're hoping for.

why would the woman give a fuck about a stupid story from a stranger Have you considered that 90% of reddit is people getting invested in stupid, probably untrue stories about strangers? How many stupid stories have you gotten invested in recently? How much gossip have you enjoyed at work or the gym lately? Stupid stories can be fun, especially as you learn to invest in the main character

Indeed. And as far as her lying to get out of the situation: don't take it personally. Not only do you not know what her text convo looked like (brother could've legit just told her to wait there), but some women just are taught that they're not allowed/safe to say 'no' directly. Doesn't reflect on your character, so long as you know you'd have respected it if she said it. Sometimes you do everything right and the other person is the socially awkward one.

I think you missed a few signs that it wasn't going as well as you thought it was. Turning down the kiss was a big one -- when someone's REALLY into you, they're gonna follow your lead. Was it your behavior or her jitters? Couldn't say. Using you for a drink? Make no mistake: the guy she wants doesn't have to buy her anything to keep her attention. Inversely, though, your frame of mind around this shows a lot of confidence (and financial stability): it's just a drink. Odds are just as good she w…
