I don't want to repeat the constructive criticism that others have posted already. It seems that you already know that you have a lot of work ahead of you, and as a fellow recovering addict I concratulate you on the work you have already done so far. One thing though. You say: "I'm keeping that mysterious brooding nature from my addiction as part of my personality." Why? Why would you want to keep that? To be able to attract more dysfunctional women? Why not strive for light, clarity and order i…

I can relate to that. Even if you have sex with an attractive woman. Shortly after you "blow your load", she just doesn't seem that attractive anymore. But I think that is just a short term solution. It's easy to avoid women and sex when you don't like them anyway. And if you despise them it's incredibly easy. I think the real task however is to get to a point where you can let go of them even if you really like them, even if you really want them - and even if you experience them as really beaut…

Yeah, the clarity of thought was what surprised me the most. I had not experienced that kind of clarity before.

Masturbation will give you a short term relieve. But in the long term in will feed your general desire for women and sex. I think the formula for sex is pretty simple: The more you do it, the more you want it. [EDIT:] But the picture is awesome! - Thanks, man!

There is a certain form of contemplation which goes directly back to the Buddha. It is called contemplation on the repulsiveness of the body and it is supposed to help monks to keep sensual restraint and celibacy. To us as modern westerners it might seem radical. But it sure is an effective way to distance yourself from lust. Just consider for example that this beautiful woman too is literally full of shit. Shit is moving through her bowels and in her bladder she is literally carying around piss…

I don't want to proselytize. I totally respect your faith. I want to recommend two books though: Mindfulness, Bliss and Beyond The Noble Eightfold Path These books focus more on the practical aspects of the buddhist teachings and I think you can gather some valuable ideas, which you can easily integrate into your own christian practice without "polluting" it.

Comment from a serious Buddhist here. I am struggling with the same basic problem. What I learned from the Red Pill so far is pretty disheartening. It doesn't encourage me to aspire to a virtuous life. What you wrote reminded me of a specific term we have in Buddhism - Samvega. Explained here by the american monk "Thanissaro": "Samvega was what the young Prince Siddhartha felt on his first exposure to aging, illness, and death. It's a hard word to translate because it covers such a complex range…

I work in education, too. And I have made similar experiences. A couple of years ago I witnessed a social studies class of a female teacher. She basically dissolved all traditional understandings of gender. She let the students collect various typical attributes of men and women, and then she began to deconstruct and relativize all of these attributes with oversimplified questions like: "Well, can't women be strong, too?" Of course she continued to talk about various professional fields which ar…

Do you listen to "Jocko Podcast"? Motivates me to get more disciplined.

No offence, man. But Buddhism clearly and decidedly does NOT mean that you can do whatever you want. That's a gross misconception.

I recommend the Dhamma Talks from the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. Especially the ones by Ajahn Brahm, Ajahn Sujato and Ajahn Brahmali. You can find them on Youtube or as Podcasts on iTunes. If you are interested in meditation I recommend Ajahn Brahm's book "Mindfulness, Bliss and Beyond". You can get a free preview here.

Well, I think the basic level is simply that you have the ability to make decisions, and decisions are either constructive or destructive. Speaking as a Buddhist I would use the terms "skillful" or "unskillful". Of course most decisions are not black or white. Even constructive decisions may have a small degree of destructiveness and vice versa. But overall all decisions we can make fall into these two basic moral categories. So I believe that virtue is basically developing and improving your ab…

Yeah, Karma certainly is one of the terms that get's thrown around a lot and probably for various reasons. I have heard women use it in a context like: "Maybe we have met in a previous life and now this is our Karma...", which again turns it into some kind of destiny or fate. I think the overarching problem is that for some reason many people think they can simply disregard their critical reasoning when it comes to spiritual matters. And if I understand you right, that is the direction you were …

I think you should not disregard Karma as something superficial. As I explained in my answer above, Karma is often misunderstood to mean something like destiny. But in fact it is the exact opposite. Karma means that you alone are responsible for your actions, decisions and their consequences. It is not some vague esoteric force. It is cause and effect, and it is very empowering because it puts you in the driverseat. Therefore it is the building block of any kind of virtue. If we were not able to…

The notion you seem to have of karma is completely wrong. Karma is the exact opposite of destiny. Karma means that your decisions and actions alone determine the consequences you will experience in the future. It is not some vague cosmic force or something like that. Actually is it very clear cut. It means you alone are responsible for your desicions, actions and their consequences. So, no offence. But your notion of it just seems to be a common misunderstanding. I believe, the correct understan…
