Clearly your second-hand experience based on this one guy a few years ago is of equal worth. Malmö is bad, by Swedish standards. Which means that it's still ridiculously safe. Just like in every other major city in the world, there are some areas where you don't walk alone at night, but that's about it. There were, in total, 11 murders in Malmö last year.
