Tax paying is another big one (which granted came later) Men were allowed to own property because they were able to pay taxes, or maybe rather the other way around, women weren't allowed to own property because you couldn't collect taxes from them. I think that both genders has their own upsides and downsides and that it has been like that for hundreds of years, however since early in the 20th century many of the male upsides and female downsides has dissapeared (or to some extend reduced) and that much of what you often hear refered to as privileges often can be double-edged swords.
