Low cost index fund/etf's like SPY are the best way to go for about 95% of people starting to invest especially if you have a long time horizon. Everyone including my University Finance professor to Warren Buffet himself says to invest in these funds so you can set it and forget it.

My ex girlfriend picked me up late one night in the middle of winter in Canada where I was kicked off the bus. I fell asleep on the bus and because it was the last stop I had to get off. It was way too far and too cold for me to walk home so I phoned her up and she picked me up in about 10 minutes meaning she left her house immediately after I had called her. After she picked me up she bought me a coffee from Tim Horton's and drove me home.
