My view of marriage isn’t positive in the first place because marriage is unnecessary. I agree that relationships definitely require open communication and a will to fix them, which can take some time and perhaps counselling. But there are often situations where it’s too far to console such as cheating, verbal abuse, physical abuse etc. And this can come from both men and women.

A lot of the things you’ve said here are maybe more extreme versions of my own opinion. I don’t think the Church has a strong influence in the sense that we are still listening to them today. But the Church is a major factor in starting up the whole Western ideal of marriage. Personally I would think that a divorce is only fair if the couple take away what they personally owned or made during the relationship, I don’t agree with the 50/50 split because that is just a doorway for manipulation and…

I feel like marriage has such an important status in society because of the Catholic Church's role in making us feel like we HAVE to marry to show we care. Women were the legal property of men. Their role to be caregivers of the home. I can see what you mean in the sense that women gained security in marriage. But if she was divorced or her husband died, she would have no property or finances associated with her. Still interested in your answer to my question though!

Personally I find marriage quite archaic. Originally marriage solely benefited men since women used to be property. If you really love someone i don't see marriage as a necessary step in showing that. It is a religious practice anyway so doesn't apply to me. But just out of curiosity, do you think it's better to stay in an unhappy marriage than to divorce? Interesting to get a new perspective.

Maybe in some relationships that would be true. But is it really better to stay in a fruitless, miserable marriage for the rest of your life?

Divorce is a good thing. If you're not in love with your partner anymore or the other way around, you should leave. That way you'll both be better off in the long run.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
