"Leaving a career" in this case means enjoying the comforts and securities paid for through someone else's work, but without actually working, oneself. Not-working is not a sacrifice. You make it sound like one party is entitled to "experience, time, and marketability". And I'm sorry, but that sounds too wild to accept. Those benefits are, last I checked, earned via work.

I'm pretty sure that there are many people who would feel very uncomfortable throwing around accusations that could ruin another's life. Certainly, when people actually do that, it's absolutely terrible. However, I don't think it takes quite the same degree of maliciousness to exploit an imaginary entity.

Jesus. This poor guy just had a massive chunk of his life stolen in exchange for, quite literally, no benefit (to him, the victim, society, or anyone). I find it baffling that, at the end of the day, we basically spent ridiculous amounts of money over three decades simply to deny this man his ability to live normal life. Honestly. How does that look on an expense sheet?

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
