Because it is a scientific premise, an axiom , it might be wrong but if we asume that is wrong , we already know the answers ,scientific progress is impossible. Because if we think that something is certain then we have no reason to question it or verify it , and we all know that these 2 things are the basics if science. I think it is proven that brain makes eletromagnetic fields , also we don t know what a receptor for an inmaterial soul would be like , it could be an emergent propriety of the whole brain ,not a place located ( special , used only for the this) in the brain , Also the brain isn t fully mapped yet , also there are hormones who we don t know the purpose of , so i cannot believe we can make a statement just yet.

Free will comes into play but i get your view , it is very pragmatic , we should all asume that we are free and do the best we can ,because there is no way of knowing for certain , but at worse we lived the same if we asume that free will is true and it is false .But if we asume that free will exists and it does we are basically winners.

This comment assigns that materialism is true , which was not proven to be false or true , so i guess the entire argument should begin with "if materialism is true " and even if it was true we still don t know the whole physics , so our conclusion is likely to be false because of lack of evidence .We don t know what consciousness is , same goes for free will.
