I'll stand by Thailand being easiest and probably one of the best. Philippines and Vietnam, too. Usually its 6 - 12 month rentals. It depends. I spoke Thai and usually rented directly from condo owners, and negotiated the shit out of it to drop rent. Everything in Thailand is negotiable (outside of chain hotels, restaurants, etc). I would probably just stay in cheap hotels until you figure out what you want to do. Decent places can be had for $15 - $20 a day.
