I think all bear moms are single moms, and they generally avoid males like a plague because males tend to see cubs as food. Human stepfathers look like saints in comparison.

I don’t know if you have kids, but in my experience, MOST of these people don’t want to watch your kids regularly. If you can arrange these people so that you and your spouse have regular time off, you’re a unicorn.

Female, 30, married. We have a 6 month old and a 2 year old. We also have a maid so during the week neither of us does much chores or cooking. My husband brings in 100% of income. I do 75% of childcare and all overnight baby care, and I also do bills, paperwork, appointments and accounting/compliance work for our small software consultancy. Weekends I do 70% of the chores and 60% of the childcare but he walks the dog (they are long walks and I do NOT want to go on those so it’s a good split). We…

Dog and hiking are not family things. Yes I have an example through family, but I have two other examples. There are many hobby groups you can join. The idea is you have to be willing to chat people up and get to know others in your local community. That’s how you get invited to stuff. If you like to go to a bookstore get to know the clerk. We also got to know a vintage camera dealer and I’m sure if we continued talking to this person we’d get invited to some other groups as well. These groups o…

As you get older mix sex friend groups are if anything more porous than ever before. As a lot of people become parents, their friend group also shakes up. People don’t keep cliques of friends. Rather they have many groups that they meet separate from their other groups, forming and disbanding all the time based on life circumstances. For instance, we have a dog and a baby. While walking the dog we met a couple with a dog and a baby. The mom and I become friends and she introduced me to a wider g…

Someone who can have your back when shit goes bad. Whether that’s against an economic downturn, a collapsed roof, an emotionally difficult time or a dangerous criminal. Women don’t like to feel like they’re the last line of defense and the buck stops with them.

Women (and men) want different traits for different roles. If you are talking about a casual partner, then as long as you’re attractive and not dangerous, that’s pretty much enough. If you are talking about a husband and father of her children, she’d lower the attractiveness requirement a bit and raise requirements for other things like money, good personality, intellect, etc. Same for men, really. My husband has dated/been with a lot of women. Around 50 by his estimation. He told me he wasn’t i…

I think it’s more nuanced than that. If you’re physically attractive, you attract more people, period. But who you end up with still has to do with you. There are shitty partners at every attractiveness level, and if you are attracted to toxic traits then you are SOL either way. I have seen SO MANY PEOPLE, man and woman, who don’t get turned on unless their prospect is at least a little bit abusive or unstable. I’ve heard men and women say “so and so is perfectly good looking. But I don’t know… …

I think it goes by stages. I experienced this myself. Before 27, it’s like “strong independent woman, go be free.” When I got married at 27 my mom accused my (older) husband of cradle robbing. After 27: “well you know you’ll turn 30 soon. Get your shit together in 3 years and pop out a kid”. I don’t remember where I read this but there was apparently a survey that showed that there was a couple of weeks in a woman’s life where the culture considers you neither too old nor too young to have your …

I think that can be true if what you are concerned is about the romantic relationship but life is much more complicated than that. People don’t just look for romantic partnerships. They also look for life partners and coparents. I can see how gender relations can look that way from a young guy’s perspective. But it’s not the full story. Once kids come into their picture, if their fathers are worth a damn as partners and coparent, they become quite irreplaceable to the woman. Children need a lot …

Depends on your goals. attractive women have it easier than attractive men on both relationships and sex unattractive women have it easier than unattractive men on sex unattractive man has it easier than unattractive women on relationships Unattractive woman cannot increase her sexual or relationship market value because so much of a woman’s value is based on looks. It is the overriding factor. I know many men who would say, yes, he wants his potential wife to have a good personality. But decent…

Exactly. Assortative mating is driving income inequality between households big time. As there are more female doctors more male doctors date them instead of nurses. I don’t think most men specifically want a lower status woman. But they are open to it. People also tend to date the people in their social circle. If you are high status you are just not going to meet many lower status people. My husband and I met in grad school. I had two close associates who weren’t in my field. People from that …

Eh. Not when the alternative hierarchies we speak of are defined by its members being unattractive incels.

It is concordant with reality though. It is the reality they share with other people in their group. It is really a hierarchy. It just might not be the part of reality they want to join, which is a successful happy relationship with a man.

Psychiatrists are brain doctors. They are not therapists and don’t do “talk therapy” or whatever. They treat you with pills.

Eh I believe it. Psychiatrists are doctors who prescribe pills for brain disorders. They’re not exactly trained to do counseling or be empathetic. More “sounds like you have low dopamine levels. Take this pill” and less “tell me about your childhood”. I have had experience with a few for my ADHD and at least one I can 100% see with this view.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
